Only 24-years-old selector, of Greek, Ecuadorean and Spanish descent, has toured Europe’s most coveted venues many times over, honing and perfecting her hypnotic sound with each distinctive set. Defined by a cosmopolitan, curious approach to art and life, Elé is as comfortable in big-room venues like Magazine Club in Lille, as she is at complete ease in more intimate spaces, like infamous Brooklyn stronghold 110 Morgan. Elé officially began her DJ career in 2006, gaining traction in 2009 after moving to Athens, where she began touring the surrounding islands. She then transitioned into a transatlantic gig schedule, shuttling between Europe and the US every six months – a relentless pace she would keep up for the next five years, collecting and storing a mélange of styles and genres in her record bag. While in Europe, she held down five month stints in Athens, Berlin, Barcelona, Mykonos, Ibiza, Milan and other cities in which techno is considered a birthright. Where she didn’t know the language or culture, the young musician absolutely thrived in resilience and curiosity, excavating authentic experiences and learning the roads, artists and sounds of each city as well as a local. At the moment, Elé counts her love of two labels – Berlin’s Pluie/Noir and Paris’ Lazare Hoche – along with her deep travel experiences and her exposure to local selectors, as her primary influences. Her creative sensibilities actually took root in her earliest days. Born in Queens to a long line of women artists, she first learned to make abstract art with her grandmother, a stained-glass maker. She’d go on to her own work in photography, printmaking and design, work that is vital to her identity today. The young Elé classically trained in drums and alto sax. From elementary school, she worked in a repurposed music studio in her family basement, and put on live shows with her older brother and his band, for the town: Elé on drums and her brother on bass. (Years later, the two still collaborate, most recently in the mountains of Corfu as their oasis to write music. Elé dubbing basslines with analog pedals, adding left-field guitar parts and spacey ambient synth pad lines, broken drum patterns on the mpc, along with Chris, her brother on bass, and analog electronics.) Her fascination with electronic music, in particular, was borne from trips to Greece in the late 90s and early 00s with her family in the summertime, where she inquisitively collected European dance CDs from bootleggers. She remains an avid music collector, seeking out rare gems from all corners of the world. Growing up, visiting shows at Madison Square Garden or Summer Stage since the early 00’s, Elé experienced an alternative side of live music and rock and roll, through the lens as a family member of the front man of Depeche Mode. Today, Elé is fresh off a twelve-city global tour that began in May of 2013 and included key appearances at the Winter Music Conference, SXSW and Art Basel. She spent the summer between Athens (her base), Ibiza, and her two new favourite cities, Berlin and Barcelona, cities in which world-class creativity and high-quality music are balanced with a more relaxed and slow living culture. This past December, Elé made her New York City homecoming, throwing down a controlled, immersive and overwhelming set at 110 Morgan, spurring a shrewd, dance music-obsessed crowd into a light frenzy. Creating thought worthy, memorable sets, however, is not her only goal: Elé is gearing up next to create an art collective and community, Kommon Veine, showcasing the work of local artists, artisanal crafters, cinematographers, painters and photographers using diverse mediums to express their vision. Whether through art or music, Elé’s unwavering balance of seriousness about her craft and a genuine desire to inspire make her an elegant force to be watched in the coming year.
