Electricity. Connection. Flow. AAguilAA harnesses these forces to convey to the world his particular vision of body-moving electronic music, be it in his role as DJ, as programmer of the long-running party Vicuna, or as co-founder of the temporary cultural space FFORMATT in Brussels. Free of the constraints of this or that scene, what matters for him is the setting, the people and, above all, the physical release of a great party. Like many kids in late 80s/early 90s Belgium, AAguilAA was captivated by the swirling innovation of EBM and New Beat. But it was on teenage holidays to the Mediterranean that he first experienced the full-body feeling of italo disco and hi-NRG played over a proper soundsystem, thus arousing a lifelong love of neon lights and the darker, synthesized side of dance music. Adding to this his growing fascination with acts like LFO, A Guy Called Gerald and DBX, it’s no surprise that his earliest DJ sets already bore the stamp of dark yet funky pop-savvy electronics with a twist. His playing style, focussed on building tension and excitement over extended sets, developed under the influence of cosmic journeymen like Optimo, Idjut Boys, DJ Harvey, and their forebears across the Atlantic: Ron Hardy and David Mancuso. The story since then can be told in the carefully chosen settings AAguilAA has both played in and constructed for the pleasure of others, always with intimate and joyful connection as the goal. As a DJ he has been a regular at Brussels underground parties and has been invited to perform at unique events across Europe, such as Bozar Nights, Impulstanz Vienna (in collaboration with New York choreographer Trajal Harell), House of Moda in Paris, and BUKA in Milan. He had a 3-year residency on Brussels’ Kiosk Radio, has been a regular on Amsterdam’s Red Light Radio and Lisbon’s Rádio Quântica and East Side Radio, and has appeared on The Lot Radio in New York. He has curated Brussels queer institution Vicuna since its launch in 2009, bringing diverse and exploratory DJs at the forefront of contemporary movements: Beautiful Swimmers, Lovefingers, Ciel, PLO Man, to name a few. He co-founded the temporary arts and culture space FFORMATT in a basement parking lot in the centre of Brussels, which would become home to collaborations with vanguard collectives like Slagwerk, Mina, Rebel Up and Chats Noir. AAguilAA has now alighted in Lisbon, from where he continues to transmit his dark, funky and energetic sound to the world. The Belgian connection remains strong, though: alongside his DJing and programming, he is currently cataloguing and documenting one of the biggest archives of the late 80s/early 90s rave scene in Belgium, centred on the magazine Out Soon and the hundreds of club recordings collected on cassette by the magazine’s founder.
