The Madeleine market was demolished in 1957 and replaced by the Brussels City Hall. The ashlar façade, the elevation of which was inspired by the Loggia dei Lanzi in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, has been preserved as the front of a new building. For some fifty years, the hall hosted a multitude of festive and cultural events of all kinds. The hall is also known for its evening events, such as the Bal des Fonctionnaires, which it hosted for many years. After several years of operation by the Casino de Bruxelles, the City of Brussels has officially entrusted the management of the Salle de la Madeleine to Brussels Expo.
