Forte Marghera is a large fortress built from the early 19th century by the French and Austrian armies. Today the fortress is monument and public park that connects Venice to the Canal Salso and, through this, to different realities that are engaged in culture and training on the mainland. The Forte is the hub of all roads (tram, bus, railroad, vehicular traffic, bicycle and nautical) connecting Mestre to Venice and the lagoon. The area is then central to the “Venice waterfront”, the natural “door of Venice” and its lagoon. Outpost of the old town of Venice, it’s interpreting again the role of physical and cultural interchange it played for centuries, before its transformation into a fortress. The Fortress has a barycentric position in the Entrenched Field of Mestre. In the wider area of the Metropolitan City, it’s in relation with the forts in the lagoon and in the coast and, towards the mainland, with the walled cities of Padua, Treviso, Noale. Forte Marghera is managed by Fondazione Forte Marghera, created in 2015 by the City of Venice, owner of the monumental area.
