Celebrating their ten-year anniversary, indispensable South London-based music and cultural collective Touching Bass touches down stateside to take over the Nowadays dancefloor for a Friday night exploring and affirming Black soulful and underground music in all its forms and expressions. Founded in 2016 by London-based Afro-Caribbean DJ, broadcaster, and music curator Errol Anderson and partner DJ Alex Rita, Touching Bass has evolved from an intimate London club night into a vital cultural incubator and global community-led movement. In addition to their eponymous record label and beloved NTS radio show, the collective’s work features, among numerous other offshoots, roving international nightlife events, a multidisciplinary curatorial studio and community hub, and a celebrated Barbican concert series, all joyously celebrating the soulful sonic textures and genre-defying traditions of the Afro-Caribbean Black Atlantic, from jazz to jungle and beyond. Showcasing the collective’s passion for promoting the eclecticism of Black music as well as the culture and community behind it, label boss Errol takes control of the decks, exemplifying his collective’s ethos with a signature freewheeling, loose-yet-intentional, genre-expansive sensibility to create captivating, searingly soulful sets designed to mobilize both bodies and communities. Extending Touching Bass’s mission to both center and concatenate multiple iterations and generations of Black music and dance music history, Errol is joined for the night by London-based DJ, producer, and TB affiliate Shy One and Brooklyn’s own Donis. Renowned for bridging generations of Black British electronic music in celebrated sets that seamlessly articulate grime, UK rap, garage, broken beat, house, and techno, Shy One shares a certain flair for both tradition and innovation with Nowadays favorite Donis, who masterfully and respectfully explores the historical intersections between soulful house, Afro house, techno, and disco while still tastefully pushing the envelope. /// RSVP is $10 before 11pm and $15 before midnight. In order to receive the RSVP discount, you must be at the ticket desk by the cutoff time and not just in line. It's wise to arrive early to make sure you're not standing in line when the time comes. Online purchases are limited to four tickets maximum per person. If tickets are sold out here, we always hold a good amount at the door. We will do our best to admit those without tickets but entrance is not guaranteed. Violence, non-consensual touching, racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, ageist or other discriminatory language, and leering are not allowed within our walls or in our back yard. If someone says or does something to make you feel uncomfortable while you’re here, let us know. /// Accessibility: The wheelchair entrance to our indoor space is in the driveway, which is the access point most commonly used to enter Nowadays. During parties the driveway gate is locked, so please ask staff at the street entrance for assistance with entry. All of our bathrooms are gender-neutral. There is one accessible stall indoors. Just ask any Nowadays staff member for the key, and they can show you the way. During parties, seating is available both on and off the dance floor. While we don’t have a dedicated quiet space indoors during parties, the booths next to coat check are a little quieter, and the deck and back yard a little quieter than that. Most nighttime parties include the use of strobe lights and water based haze.
