The Pharcyde (US)

Born in South Central Los Angeles, The Pharcyde stand alongside A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and Gang Starr as one of the defining groups of hip-hop’s Golden Era. Originally formed in 1989, The Pharcyde released their debut album, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde, in 1992. The record delivered a string of tracks that have since become ’90s hip-hop classics, including “Passin’ Me By,” “Ya Mama,” “Soul Flower,” “Otha Fish” and more. Their follow-up, Labcabincalifornia, arrived in 1996, featuring production from Jay Dee (J Dilla), Diamond D and M-Walk. The album spawned two iconic singles, “Runnin’” and “Drop,” with the latter accompanied by its now-legendary video directed by Spike Jonze. With their off-kilter production, sharp lyricism and unmistakable South Central sensibility, The Pharcyde have cemented their place among the godfathers of alternative hip-hop. This November, they bring the sound of one of hip-hop’s most influential eras to Walyalup.
