Spacetime presents: A TRICKSTER HALLOWEEN The fabled Trickster appears across cultures and throughout time, taking the form of cunning, mischievous creatures - foxes, crows, coyotes and more - shape-shifters, rule-breakers and masters of deception. In a world seemingly overrun by Tricksters, we invite you to turn the tables, summon your own cunning, and take back the night. This Halloween, our festivities are hosted by twin tricksters the Crow and the Fox, brought to life by Spacetime mural artist June. Our colourful, cunning twosome invites you to get creative with your costume - think tricks, riddles, puzzles, optical illusions and playful deceptions. Nothing is quite as it seems! It all unfolds at the downtown Lithuanian House — a labyrinthine lair of nooks, nodes and curious corners in which to lose or find yourself. Towering ceilings, winding staircases, chandeliers, creaky old balconies and cavernous halls set the scene and massive sound systems and immersive art installations trick the place out. We’re here together in this slice of time, so be good to each other - always exhibit care, patience, and respect. Move with awareness, ask for consent, and allow people their space to dance and to be. If cost or accessibility is standing in your way, email loop@spacetimexo.com - we’ll make sure you can join us. Our harm reduction monitors and crew are present all night to support anyone who needs a hand. Let’s take care of the space, the time, and each other. TRICKSTER THEME: The inspiration for this year's Trickster theme came during a wander through the Detroit Institute of Arts' Indigenous Americas galleries, where Harry Fonseca's Shuffle Off to Buffalo #2 caught our eye. The painting conjures the classic American carnival barker and huckster, embodied as a coyote dressed in Uncle Sam's stars and stripes. The Trickster appears across cultures and throughout time, woven into folklore, fables and mythology. From Nanabush, the shape-shifting trickster and cultural hero of the Anishinaabe, to Reynard the Fox, the crafty rogue of European fables, these cunning characters bend rules, challenge authority and turn the world upside down. What better theme to bring to Halloween in 2026? Every day, our sense of reality is confounded as truths seem lies and lies seem truth. Artificial intelligence can now manufacture reality so convincingly that our filters have snapped - leaving us questioning almost everything we see and hear. How do we hold on to our values, our humour and our humanity in such slippery times? Perhaps the answer is to become Tricksters ourselves. To embrace mischief, sharpen our wits, question appearances and turn deception on its head. To find joy and possibility in the unexpected, and trick our way toward a more beautiful world. If the world insists on playing tricks on us, it's time we learned a few tricks of our own. EVENT ART by JUNE KIM: Our Trickster characters were brought to life in a custom commission by our dear friend and celebrated Toronto muralist @junekima.rt! We're thrilled that June found time for us between mural festivals across North America and organizing her own KJ BIT Laneway Jam in Toronto, October 10–11. As arts and culture organizations increasingly turn to AI-generated imagery to stretch tight budgets, we believe it's more important than ever to support real human creativity. Especially in a world where it's getting harder to tell what's real! Big love to June for bringing our mischievous Crow and Fox to life. See you out there:)
