PHRE Festival Finale: Habibi Funk + Morena Leraba + Seducation

PHRE will showcase local and international artists working in experimental pop music from Greece, Sudan, France, Colombia, Italy, Lebanon and other countries. The focus is not on world music, but on decolonial and progressive trends in contemporary music. The festival’s name is inspired by the Afrofuturist Sun Ra, who used the term ‘PHRE’ (pronounced free) to challenge genre boundaries. Unsere Vorfreude ist riesig, dass sich Jannis Stürtz aka Habibi Funk mit seinen Vinyls von Funk, Soul und Jazz bis hin zu Punk und Hip Hop auf dem Finale von PHRE die Ehre gibt. Statt einer Frontalperformance verwandeln wir den Spiegelplatz in eine riesige Open Air-Tanzfläche rund um das DJ-Pult und geben uns unbekannten musikalischen Schätzen hin, die in den 60er- bis 80er-Jahren in der SWANA-Region veröffentlicht wurden. [EN] Ever since Import Export first opened, we’ve been playing records from the Habibi Funk label non-stop. We’re absolutely thrilled that Jannis Stürtz, aka Habibi Funk, is gracing us with his presence at the PHRE finale, spinning vinyl ranging from funk, soul and jazz right through to punk and hip hop. Instead of a traditional stage performance, we’re transforming Spiegelplatz into a huge open-air dance floor centred around the DJ booth, where we’ll lose ourselves in musical treasures we’ve never heard before, released in the SWANA region between the 1960s and 1980s. Morena Leraba (Lesotho) [DE] Morena Leraba ist der Künstlername von Teboho Mochaoa, einem Musiker und Hirten aus Matholeng, einem Dorf in der Region Mafeteng südlich von Lesothos Hauptstadt Maseru. 2017 gründete Morena Leraba in Johannesburg gemeinsam mit anderen Musikern seine gleichnamige Band, die traditionelle Sesotho-Musik mit interkulturellen Einflüssen verbindet und so einen einzigartigen Sound schafft, der vom Geheimnis eines Hirten aus den Bergen Lesothos durchdrungen ist. In den vergangenen neun Jahren hat sich Morena Leraba durch einen genreübergreifenden Sound (inspiriert von der Famo-Musik aus Lesotho) zu einer weltweit anerkannten Persönlichkeit entwickelt, angetrieben von mitreißenden Live-Auftritten, hochkarätigen Kollaborationen und seinem 2023 erschienenen Debütalbum „Fela sa Ha Mojela“. Die von The Good Times Co und Permanent Record veröffentlichte EP ist eine Hommage an die Lieder seiner Heimatregion und zeigt seine Fähigkeit, von Famo inspirierten Gesang mit vielfältigen musikalischen Einflüssen zu einem Sound zu verschmelzen, der psychedelisch, bezaubernd und dynamisch ist. Nach Johannesburg zu kommen und die Musiker zu treffen, die diese Reise geprägt haben, war in gewisser Weise die Manifestation dieser Neuinterpretation.“ [EN] Morena Leraba is the stage name of Teboho Mochaoa, a musician and shepherd from Matholeng, a village in the Mafeteng region south of Lesotho’s capital, Maseru. In 2017, Morena Leraba formed his eponymous group in Johannesburg with other musicians, blending traditional Sesotho music with cross-cultural influences to mould a singular sound imbued with the enigma of a shepherd from Lesotho mountains. Over the past nine years, Morena Leraba has become a globally recognized figure through a genre-defying sound (inspired by Famo music from Lesotho) propelled by electrifying live performances, high-profile collaborations, and his 2023 debut record, Fela sa Ha Mojela. Released by The Good Times Co and Permanent Record, the EP pays tribute to the songs of his home region, capturing his ability to fuse Famo-inspired vocals with diverse musical influences into a sound that is psychedelic, entrancing, and dynamic. Famo, a sub-genre of Sesotho traditional music and poetry, is deeply rooted in Morena Leraba’s home district of Mafeteng and was introduced as early as the 1920s when Basotho men were migrant labourers in the South African mines. „I understand Famo,“ he says. „But because we also have influences from elsewhere, I guess l’ve been reimagining Sesotho traditional music. Coming to Johannesburg and meeting the musicians who have shaped this journey was, in a way, the manifestation of that reimagination.“ Seducation (Munich) [DE] Nur wenige DJs matchen so gut mit dem Import Export wie David Hoehn aka Seducation.
