PHRE Festival: Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek + Cocanha + Katscha

PHRE will showcase local and international artists working in experimental pop music from Greece, Sudan, France, Colombia, Italy, Lebanon and other countries. The focus is not on world music, but on decolonial and progressive trends in contemporary music. The festival’s name is inspired by the Afrofuturist Sun Ra, who used the term ‘PHRE’ (pronounced free) to challenge genre boundaries. Cocanha pflegt einen minimalistischen Ansatz und verbindet ihn mit der Ästhetik verstärkter Musik, die unmittelbar zum Tanzen einlädt. Ausgehend vom traditionellen okzitanischen Repertoire beleben sie Archivmaterial neu und führen es zurück in die mündliche Überlieferung. Einige Texte werden neu geschrieben, andere entstehen frei aus einer gemeinsamen Vorstellungskraft. Die weiblichen Figuren in ihren Liedern treten selbstbestimmt auf und verleihen ihrem Begehren Ausdruck. In this powerful face-to-face encounter, the two musicians reveal their complementary vocal personalities, woven together by 12 years of artistic collaboration.Cocanha cultivates minimalism and embraces the aesthetics of amplified music, engaging the body in dance. The two musicians draw on the traditionalOccitan repertoire, reviving archives and placing them back in the oral tradition. Some lyrics are rewritten, others invented, emanating from a sharedimagination under the open sky. The female characters in the songs reclaim their power of desire and assert it. Deryas Großmutter interpretierte das Stück auf ihre eigene Weise, Deryas Version ist ähnlich – und doch ganz anders. Das ist kein Zufall, sondern Konzept, denn Derya ist überzeugt: Wer ein altes Volkslied spielt, muss ihm etwas Eigenes hinzufügen, „sonst könnte man genauso gut die alte Platte auflegen“. Als musikalisches Archiv kollektiver Erfahrungen umfasst das neue Album Yarin Yoksa Eigenkompositionen und featured drei traditionelle anatolische Volkslieder. Derya Yildirim gibt ihre Stimme dem kulturellen Erbe ihrer Familie, einem Volksliedgut, das im Gestern schon da war und das es lange noch geben wird. Behutsam und respektvoll überträgt sie die Lieder in die Gegenwart, färbt sie psychedelisch ein und unterlegt sie mit hypnotischem Gesang. [EN] Derya Yildirim is singing the song her grandmother used to sing — an old Anatolian folk standard called „Hop Bico“, which roughly translates as „Hop Around Bico“. But the version Derya’s grandmother sang was different — she’d put her own slant on it. And Derya’s is different still — brought into the 21st century with a slow psychedelic twist and her own hypnotic vocals. This is by design. Derya insists that if you’re going to play an old folk song then you have to contribute something new, „otherwise you might as well just put the old record on.“ Born in Hamburg, Germany to Turkish parents, she grew up influenced by her family’s Anatolian background and the myriad of cultures in the city. Derya’s musical roots started at home playing folk music with family members. Her father pushed her to learn various instruments, beginning with the baglama, a seven stringed Turkish lute. Then she picked up the guitar, piano, and saxophone. Although she is a multi-instrumentalist, Derya always felt drawn to the sound of the baglama – „there’s just something very magical about it“. With her band Grup Simsek’s forthcoming album Yarin Yoksa, which translates to If There’s No Tomorrow, Derya continues her journey revitalizing Anatolian folk music and instrumentation by infusing timeless melodies with a modern psychedelic flair. Katscha (Berlin) [DE] KATSCHA ist ein DJ und Kulturschaffender aus Berlin, dessen Sets nahtlos zwischen basslastigen, experimentellen und transnationalen Club-Sounds wechseln und dabei unerwartete Verbindungen zwischen Genres und Regionen herstellen. Als Teil des Teams hinter if iÇE arbeitet er an der Schnittstelle von Musik und Community und gestaltet ein Festival, bei dem Künstler*innen mit unterschiedlichem Hintergrund Traditionen neu interpretieren und sich neue klangliche Zukunftsvisionen erschaffen.
