curious & unexpected sounds ' - ''~ < ;; } thursday august 27, at the jama explore a shifting realm of live electronics, textured narratives, celestial, airy immersion, techy depths, and angular, scattered percussion a snapshot of sonics from ::: ⋮ ⌗ ┆⋮ ⌗ ┆⋮ ⌗ ┆⋮ ⌗ ┆⋮ ⌗ ┆ ⋮ Dave Huismans [NL] ⋮ Renowned for some of this century’s most notorious rhythmic advances, the work of Dutch artist Dave Huismans (fka A Made Up Sound and 2562) continues to provide a blueprint for new generations of innovation-obsessives. Dave has spent years dismantling the boundaries of electronic music; folding house, techno, broken beat, and raw bass music into something entirely his own, and is likely some of your favourite DJs’ favourite producer. "“I’ve no idea how Dave does it, but his tracks manage to be at once totally self-contained, like variations on a theme existing in their own private universe, and totally outward-looking and expansive…. His music is unmistakable, and it’s been a staple of my sets for nearly 10 years… " - Ben UFO After a long hiatus from releasing original material, he returned in 2025 with two beloved EP’s as ex_libris, and an LP as In Transit. "The way he works with rhythm is unparalleled—I remember seeing him play his first ever live set at Freerotation a few years ago, and after dancing for 45 minutes and hearing his percussion unraveling and twisting over itself, a friend turned to me and said, “There are no rhythms left! That’s it; he’s done all of them!” - Ben UFO Now performing under his birth name, Dave Huismans has returned to dj’ing, the art form he’s been practicing passionately ever since first setting foot in a record store in the mid 90’s. His way of playing from the soul while effortlessly surfing through decades of dance music culture and lived experience has subsequently won the heart & feet of new generations of dancers. ⋮ Pursuit Grooves {live} ⋮ Pursuit Grooves (Vanese Smith) has released over 16 albums and EPs and featured on more than 20 releases and compilations. Born in Washington, DC, a long time resident of Brooklyn, NY and now calling Toronto home, she creates sonically adventurous electronic (mostly) instrumental music ranging from cinematic, to experimental, to uptempo. A 2008 Barcelona Red Bull Music Academy alum, she has performed at festivals and theatres across Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia and more. She is also a 2025 Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize finalist. Vanese co-founded Loop Sessions Toronto in 2019, an event programming collective that focuses on music education, sampling culture, and electronic production. You can also find her VJing live music events as Mo:delic Arts and teaching creative workshops for a number of organizations and universities. ⋮ Stow {live} ⋮ ⋮ Ceremonies ⋮ Ceremonies' sound is rooted in interesting percussion, and hops tastefully through bass, breaks, leftfield techno, and punchy club tracks. She's graced clubs, raves, and festivals across North-Eastern America, including both Boiler Room and Redbull Music Fest, and has shared lineups with genre-defining artists like Martyn, Forest Drive West, re:ni, Huerco S., and SHED. In radio, Ceremonies is a past resident of Montreal’s n10.as, Toronto's Another Setting Radio, Lisbon’s Rádio Quântica, and has made guest appearances on both Rinse.fm and Rinse France. As one-third of DIY former rave collective On Earth, Ceremonies has brought 30 odd artists through the city, focusing on music that sits outside the congested zones of trend and functionality. She’s been interviewed in both academic and DIY spaces, has presented at conferences, has hosted workshops with Roland Instruments Canada, and has partnered on large-scale events with organizations like Mutek and Pride Toronto. ⋮ Hemlock ⋮ Part-DIY event organizer, part-DJ, part-radio host, Hemlock curates sounds in the tradition of house, techno, and bass. Beyond co-founding Notabbq and Lucid, two collectives raising the bar for immersive Toronto raves, Hemlock helps run local events like Muster Point. His sound has earned him supporting slots for headliners like Roman Flügel, Ciel, and Destiny. He runs his own show biweekly on Toronto’s own Another Setting Radio. As a DJ, he selects tunes across genres to evoke shifting moods, using driving sub frequencies and dub motifs as a cohesive glue to unite tracks within a set. ⋮ ⌗ ┆⋮ ⌗ ┆⋮ ⌗ ┆⋮ ⌗ ┆⋮ ⌗ ┆ ꨄ︎ ⋮ Dave Huismans [NL] ⋮ {read on to learn more} As 2562, Dave helped pioneer the crossover between techno and dubstep via Tectonic Recordings, alongside peers like Peverelist, Martyn, and Pinch. The project’s influence continues to ripple through today’s bass music scene. His A Made Up Sound alias pushed his vision further, blending experimentation with dancefloor impact. Releases on Delsin, The Trilogy Tapes, and especially his self-titled 12” series (A Made Up Sound 001–009) drew universal acclaim: FACT called it “one of the best techno labels of the past 10 years,” while Resident Advisor ranked its retrospective compilation #1 in their year-end list. After a long hiatus, he made an emphatic and widely celebrated return in 2025, introducing ex_libris, a new series of lovingly presented 12” EPs. Its first three installments presented a new iteration to his sound; a wonderfully immersive, narrative strand of leftfield house and off-the-grid grooves amounting to some of his most beloved work yet. Arguably even more surprising was his next venture, In Transit, an absorbing LP with six downtempo pieces, tangential to his previous work and more experimental in nature. Both of Dave’s new aliases have marked a fascinating development within his already sprawling catalogue, continuing his singular sound with remarkable new expressions that ended up in many publications’ and artist’s EOY lists. Finally, Dave’s an incredibly versatile and skilled dj, drawing from over 30 years of passionate music digging to join the dots between past, present and future.
