Nicht erst seit der Pandemie wissen wir: Luft als ultimatives Gemeingut steht auf dem Spiel. Im immersiven 360° Film Air Study von Daniel Kötter fliegt das Leipziger Publikum mittels VR-Brillen an die Orte, wo unser Planet atmet und keucht. Auf der vulkanischen Insel Java begleiten wir eine Gruppe indonesischer Künstler:innen, verloren in einer Landschaft zwischen Bergbau-Desastern und natürlichen Schlammvulkanen. Als geisterhafte Teilnehmer ihrer Reise, haben wir teil an ihrer Suche nach dem, was wir nicht sehen, und dem, was uns alle verbindet. Zwischen geologischen Tiefen und sphärischen Höhen lauschen wir in Ikbal Luby’s blubbernder Konzertinstallation dem Gas und den Geistern, den Wind- und Datenströmen. Klimawandel beginnt in unseren eigenen Körpern und endet in der Imagination des vermeintlich Fernen – eine sphärische Geistererzählung. Air Study setzt die Kollaboration zwischen dem deutschen Dokumentarfilmemacher Daniel Kötter und dem indonesischen Instrumentenbauer und Musiker Ikbal Lubys fort, die in Leipzig am Schauspiel bereits mit Gold & Coal (2019) und mit Roden (Politik im Freien Theater 2025) zu sehen war. Air Study ist das erste Projekt einer neuen Reihe zum Thema „Aerosphäre“. We all breathe. The recent pandemic only exacerbated the realisation that air, as the ultimate commons, is at stake. Daniel Kötter’s immersive 360° film Air Study transports the Leipzig audience to the places where our planet breathes and gasps. On the volcanic island of Java, we accompany a group of Indonesian artists, lost in a landscape caught between mining disasters and natural mud volcanoes. As ghostly companions on their journey, we share their search for what we cannot see, and for what connects us all. Between geological depths and atmospheric heights, in Ikbal Luby’s bubbling concert installation we listen to the gas and the spectres, the winds and the data streams: Climate change begins within our own bodies and ends in our imagination of what is supposedly far away – a celestial ghost story. Air Study continues the collaboration between the German documentary filmmaker Daniel Kötter and the Indonesian instrument maker and musician Ikbal Luby. Their previous works staged at Schauspiel Leipzig include Gold & Coal (2019) and Roden (Politik im Freien Theater 2025).
