As a DJ, event organizer, dancer, and member of the Ballroom community, VARSHA is a visionary multidisciplinary artist that brings her infectious curiosity, passion for community, and lively, upbeat approach to life to all the spaces she curates and shares into. Whether it’s in NYC, the Bay Area, or in LA, VARSHA has an undying love and enthusiasm for community organizing around local, underground music and queer scenes. She uniquely thrives as a connective tissue between all of the different communities she’s a part of — the Ballroom scene, the freestyle/house dancer scene, and the underground electronic music/DJ scene. What these communities share informs the root of all of her work and artistic practices — a deep love for dance music and bringing people together. This year sees the release of a large project of hers within these ethos — a dance music compilation titled ‘I.Y.K.Y.K.’, that she’s co-curating and promoting alongside fellow DJ and creative partner, 4AM NYC, to be released under the label Air Texture. Together they specifically invited 19 producer-DJs that are all femme or non-binary identifying, to submit a track ‘in the spirit of House music.’ The duo is set to throw several parties this summer with the comp’s DJs leading up to its release in Fall 2023, including a Pride weekend takeover in June at the new Jolene club and rooftop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Another one of her ongoing projects is a monthly radio show and pioneering party series based in the Bay Area called BODY HIGH. As a dance party, BODY HIGH is unlike any other — it connects VARSHA’s different communities together, intentionally creating space for freestyle dancers (such as voguers, house dancers, waackers) at the club, while consciously centering the comfort and freedom of femme-, trans-, and GNC- individuals.
