Info
Unabridged is an imprint of As You Like It, a cornerstone of Bay Area underground culture for over 15 years. Conceived as a long-form narrative, Unabridged explores the roots of dance music, examining the foundational elements that shape today’s sound while looking forward to the creatives poised to influence the culture for decades to come. At its core, the project reflects the Bay Area’s ongoing relationship with these artists, histories, and movements. Unabridged was born from a desire for deeper dialogue, conversations only possible through a sustained, event-driven campaign.
The Made in Detroit campaign centers the origins of techno through the voices of its creators, foregrounding Black, brown, and queer innovators whose contributions have long been under-recognized in the United States.
“Detroit techno is America’s story,” says Jeremy Bispo, founder of As You Like It and Unabridged. “Black and brown Americans, both straight and queer, created an entirely new genre of music. It has traveled the world, yet its origins remain overlooked at home.”
Over a 12-month arc, Unabridged will present programming in hand-selected venues, ranging from seated theater conversations and intimate listening sessions to large-scale dance floors and site-specific gatherings. All panels will be archived, accompanied by an ongoing podcast and interview series documenting Detroit’s living cultural ecosystem.
