BACK STORY Born in Camden. Toby Slade-Baker started collecting house and techno records in the mid nineties aged 16. He launched his first club night in 1998 with Miles Atmospheric (Bedrock / Ornate / Atmospheric Existence) and continued playing to a loyal following of local ravers with guest slots at nights around Cambridge, London and the south east before moving down to Brighton. In 2001 Toby handed this mix tape to Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) who took him on as promoter / producer and resident DJ at the Big Beat Boutique, playing weekly alongside X_Press 2, Dave Clarke, Radio Slave, John Carter, Erol Alkan, Arthur Baker... @ Turnmills (London), Bed (Sheffield), The Arches (Glasgow), Concorde 2 (Brighton). Meanwhile Toby continued to organise his own more intimate underground parties to explore the deeper edges of house and techno. As Living City, and individually, the boys went on to play a long list of parties around the world including Circo Loco World Tour – Brighton / London. Classic – The End – London. In 2004, under the moniker 'Living City' with Miles (Atmospheric) Sagnia, Toby's track 'Steppin' Out' - a dubby tech house affair - was signed by the legendary Eddie Richards for his Fabric Mix (Fabric 16) to industry acclaim. Featuring an edit of Steppin’ Out as well as a world-y building acid house number called Tibetan Calling which was supported by DJs all over the world. (https://www.beatport.com/track/tibetan-calling/333452) Soon after the boys were asked by label boss of Liquid Sound to remix the single ‘Vuja De’ from the Orb album 'The Dream' which was released towards the end of 2007. (LINK) CAREER AND COMEBACK 'He made a career out of music supervision, but Toby has always been a Club dj at heart' A chance encounter while DJing in New Zealand introduced Toby to the world of music supervision for film and TV which changed the direction of his life. He spent the next 15 years selecting music and producing sound for the worlds biggest agencies and brands (+ having a son and moving to Barcelona). Toby launched his own companies Thirty Two Music and Virtual sound which continue as successful businesses in the advertising production landscape today. This took him away from regular club gigs for nearly 10 years... but the music was always there and the turntables were always on. Toby kept his ears in by regularly playing to crowds at film industry events and afterparties, including the festivals in Cannes - and appearing on Ministry of Sound radio amongst others. In Summer 2021 Toby decided to come back to DJing more regularly. The pull was too strong. It was the missing element in his life. He started to develop his own brand of deep / afro / disco / tech with roots firmly in detroit, chicago and Uk underground scenes... covering the full spectrum of house music while playing at beach parties in Barcelona and Vilanova. In 2022 Toby launched Shambala as a series of summer parties in beautiful beach and villa locations in Sitges, Sant Pere, Vilanova which quickly grew to a 400 strong crowd of house music lovers dancing to some of the most talented local house DJs who joined Toby on the decks for some unforgettable moments. Toby is based in Barcelona and open to global bookings.
