The Rat

Born in Ōtautahi, Finlay Anderson (aka “The Rat”) first made his mark at 16 with his digital hardcore project Internet Death, fusing high-octane gabber and jungle beats with punk vocals and live drums. In 2019 he released the mixtape Mega Sony Dream Kill, followed by his debut album Not Your Dog (2020) on Muzai Records. As his tastes evolved, he was gradually drawn into the dance music scene and began DJing at parties at 17. In 2021 he launched Percussion and Weight, a club night dedicated to techno and hard dance in Ōtautahi. The project soon expanded into a radio show on local station RDU, helping to cement his reputation for pushing a harder sound in the city. After spending time immersed in clubs across Berlin and London in 2023, he’s returned with fresh influences to fold into his sets. The Rat’s style blends UK techno, hardgroove, hypnotic, and industrial elements into high-energy, functional, and fluid sets. His sets have earned him slots alongside acts such as Boris (Berghain), Keepsakes (HAVEN), and Ebb, as well as appearances at festivals including Twisted Frequency, Rolling Meadows, and Electric Avenue.
