The Curls Crew

The Curls Crew presents a unique premise: world-building skits that encapsulate the 80s & 90s DJ era. Full of references to DJ culture, Hip Hop, House and most of all cassette tapes, the story follows two low-level thugs who sell bootleg tapes to get by. One day while selling tapes, they receive a message, a cassette with a simple message written on it, "DIE". Moving their operations around over and over, the crew is never safe from the proprietor of this mysterious calling card. After a run in with him, well the crew was never the same. The Curls Crew aims to preserve 80s & 90s DJ culture and the various art-forms that surround it. Using era-authentic techniques, they use an interdisciplinary approach to recreate and preserve various methods of art that have long been rendered obsolete by the digital age. Each member brings a unique skill to the table: printmaking, film photography, physical graphic design, music production and of course, DJing on wax. Oozing authenticity, the crew hands out cassette tapes at their parties packed with original material recorded out of grungy home studios or carefully crafted DJ mixes. Often calling up the OGs of Montreal's scene to spin records and share a bit of their history, they spin a mix of old school Hip Hop, House, Disco & Downtempo. They reserve a special focus on Hip House, an often under appreciated genre, but one that keeps the dance floor continuously rocking, with its swingin' house beats and hardcore raps.
