sonchauni is the moniker of Assi Abogado. Their eclectic approach traverses from sticky and seductive to textural and laser-beaming soundscapes. With an affinity for electronic music’s unpredictable nature, they create intense atmospheres on the dance floor—melding an intoxicating tapestry of sound. Drawing on their early years of exploring electronic music styles, sonchauni found a playground for experimentation via Elephant, a queer techno/dance collective, eventually becoming the party’s visual director and resident DJ. Since migrating from Manila to Dubai, sonchauni continues to expand their sound horizons through co-founding sub:enema, a dynamic, alternative gen z-centric party in Dubai celebrating creative individuality, showcasing niche subgenres to push the envelopes of the local scene. sonchauni furthermore explores selections that highlight a nuanced, intergenerational grasp of dance music within Dancewerk, a Dubai-based electronic club series known for its chic, vibrant, and groove-laden atmospheres reminiscent of the 90s house club scene. They have played live and online for Struma+Iodine, Sonic Agency, Secta, The Flip Side, Crystal Queer, Sfera, Hanoi Community Radio, Manila Community Radio, Kaput, Sadomasodisco, Transit Records, and many more. Outside the DJ booth, Assi Abogado is a multidisciplinary artist, and visual director for sub:enema and Dancewerk.
