Having originally grown up in Tokyo, Japan, John Small (Sohn Jamal) relocated to Miami in 2014 to study guitar. His first album, "Suzy", came out in 2018 under Miami-based label Night Young. After releasing a series of singles and eps releases with various Miami labels as well as his own imprint TY Tapes, his second album "Scroo Amethyst", recorded primarily in a cabin in Maine was released under Schematic Music Company. A promo single "UR21201820" was released in anticipation of the project. As a producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist, he has opened for the likes of Machinedrum, Vegyn, Iglooghost, and Plaid. He is also a resident of the newly established Miami Community Radio, playing all things left-field on his weekly show "Nothing Time".
