Hailing from Puglia in Southern Italy, artist/DJ Silvia Kastel’s musical background began in experimental voice and electronics while studying sound engineering and electronic music in New York. She started performing live in 2008 with a main focus on experimental electronic music and extended vocal techniques. Evolving into DJing while based in Berlin between 2014 and 2018, first on radio and then in clubs, and now based in London with a monthly residency on NTS, her range has expanded to combine this history of sonic exploration of the outer edges with a sensual club music that simultaneously provokes the bodily push and pull of dancefloor tension and feverish release. Her sets fuse sonic experimentation and unashamedly pop melodies with the bass-heavy driving polyrhythms of regional club sounds from Latin America, the Caribbean and the US and the UK (dembow, dancehall, grime, jungle, techno, footwork to name a few). From founding her own label Ultramarine in 2009 (now on hiatus), she was already a prominent figure on the experimental and electronic underground when her debut album, ‘Air Lows’ dropped on Blackest Ever Black in 2018. Now, whether on DJ Stingray’s curated stage at Dimensions Festival, Dekmantel Selectors, Boiler Room in Dehli and Mumbai, All in Shanghai, WWW in Tokyo, Version in Ohm Berlin, or De School in Amsterdam, her reputation precedes her as a diverse and experimental selector, whose singular taste can unite the most disparate of genres, styles and tempos. If Kastel’s music often concerns the difficult relationship between technology and humanity, then the generous attitude of her club sets only serves to unite the latter.
