Samrai has performed, recorded & delivered workshops all over Europe as well as in Armenia, Canada, Colombia, Jamaica, India & Thailand. He has been a guest on BBC Asian Network, Radio 1, 1Xtra & BBC 6 Music as well as co-hosting a monthly radio show on NTS Live (2015-2021). In 2020 Balraj Singh Samrai began collaborating with Farah Ahmad Khan – alongside a host of talent including Asian Dub Foundation’s Pandit G, renowned tabla player Vikaash Sankadecha as well as Gavsborg and Shanique Marie of acclaimed Jamaican collective Equiknoxx – on ‘I Should Have Hugged You Tighter When We Last Met [Oh what a joy]’. Created with the support of Opera North’s artist development programme, Resonance: The Lockdown Edition, the work responded to life in the COVID-19 era and the impact the pandemic has had on Black, Asian, Indigenous and Global Majority groups. In March 2021 Balraj & Farah self-released “Healing” a positive affirmation offering hope and solidarity as well as marvelling at the scientific advances that may heal and unify divisions; a celebration of survival. Balraj was supported as an MIF Festival Sounds Artist performing on three occasions at the festival in July 2021. In the Autumn of 2021 Balraj & Farah released Planet-People-Power, a work commissioned by Manchester Museum and Season for Change. This explored diaspora experiences in relation to climate change, touching on intersectional environmentalism, environmental inequality and the ecological interconnectedness between Manchester and the Global South. The work received multiple plays on BBC 6 Music from key tastemakers Mary Anne Hobbs and Jamz Supernova. To round off 2021 Balraj released the MIF-supported Someone Died Today, dealing with loss in a South Asian household the work featured excerpts from his Mum, Bibi (Grandma), poetry from Farah, additional vocals from Shanique, Tabla from Vikaash & Violin from Simmy Singh. ​​It also featured artwork from amad.studio of Daytimers with visuals shot and directed by Ilum Studio. The project raised funds for Taraki, a non-profit working with Punjabi communities to reshape approaches to mental health and received support from Mixmag, DJ Mag, Bandcamp Weekly & BBC Lancashire with plays from Mr Scruff and Robert Luis. In 2022 with Swing Ting coming to a close Balraj began a new chapter to focus on solo and collaborative projects, a musical publication, wider educational facilitation in his local community, allotment podcasting and green fingered endeavours with partner Antonia Canal as Aerial Roots. Yet with Samrai’s unique style, passion and ear for grooves you’ll be likely to catch him playing DJ sets and supplying vibrant guest mixes for many years to come..
