RED KING is a Scottish rapper, producer and live performer whose introspective storytelling and electronic-leaning sound have carved out a distinct place in the UK’s underground music scene. Based in Glasgow, he fuses grime, rap and dance music into a dark, high-energy hybrid that prioritises both lyrical depth and physical impact. Growing up between his mum’s home in Fife and his dad’s in Dundee, RED KING’s earliest musical influences came indirectly—absorbing the sounds of 90s dance compilations playing around the house. Artists like The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers left a lasting imprint, shaping an instinctive connection to tempo, tension and release long before he began writing his own material. He started rapping at 14, filling notebooks in school corridors, and later taught himself to produce in his twenties using FL Studio. This self-directed approach allowed him to develop a sound that merged intricate wordplay with heavy, electronic-driven beats. Before relocating to Glasgow, he cut his teeth performing at Dundee’s legendary Reading Rooms, sharing the stage with esteemed local acts Le Freak & Friends and Spee Six Nine. RED KING studied Psychology at Glasgow Caledonian University, a background that feeds directly into his music. By day, he works supporting young people with mental health challenges; by night, he transforms lived experience into emotionally aware, psychologically informed writing. This duality sits at the heart of his work—songs that are vulnerable without being soft, and aggressive without losing nuance. His live career reflects a relentless, DIY ethos. He has supported BRIT Award winner CASisDead, hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash, and shared stages with artists including Talib Kweli, Manga St. Hilaire, Mic Righteous, SonnyJim and Aerospace. In 2024, he headlined Kelburn Festival’s Twin Teepees tent as part of a queer takeover, adapting his sound on the fly by remixing crowd classics like Blue Monday and Cry Me A River into garage and DnB while MCing over them. Internationally, RED KING has built bridges as well as stages. He organised and performed at multiple shows in Marseille, arranging a two-way gig exchange between French and Scottish MCs. This relationship later expanded into a Creative Scotland-funded Scottish takeover event in Marseille, which he headlined. He continues to champion collaboration and would incorporate international artists into future live sets wherever possible. His previous release, For the Night, led to a self-curated multi-city tour across Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow, selling out the Dundee date. Alongside this, he opened NIGHTVISION Studios in Glasgow’s east end and has delivered songwriting workshops for young offenders at HMP Polmont, unaccompanied refugee minors and young people with additional support needs. RED KING’s upcoming EP, The Dark Before, is due for release in April 2026. The project draws inspiration from classic sci-fi visuals and sound design, filtered through Glasgow’s booming electronic scene, and features production from local stalwarts Rapture 4D, Casement and others. Designed with the live environment in mind, the project will be performed as a high-energy, dance-focused set, complete with visuals and expanded instrumentation.
