Oba+Flip
Biografía
ọba+flip - DJ duo based in Brooklyn, New York. Photographer Idris Ademola (ọba) and editor/writer Stella Cabot Wilson (flip) met at an underground techno party in 2017 that blossomed into a partnership of love. They have been playing together since 2020, after what started as a shared hobby has unfolded into a way to express their deep affection for music and commitment to each other. “ọba” means “king” in Yoruba, Idris’s mother’s first language, and “flip” references the flip phone Stella still carried when they met, as well as the duo’s desire to “flip things up.” They bring their disparate lived experiences together to create sets driven by story, melody, and hard-driving, vibrational, groovy sounds.
Idris grew up in New York, frequenting the club scene since fifteen. Stella grew up in Wyoming and discovered electronic music for the first time while studying abroad in Berlin. Their musical interests span all electronic genres, including house, deep house, afro house, organic house, melodic house, techno, and downtempo.
ọba+flip have played various events including Zero, Reborn, ebb + flow, Miki Beach, Sonic Jungle, the Lighthouse, and iknowthedj. Major venues in NYC include House of Yes and Knockdown Center. Major clubs in Berlin include Kater Blau and Sisyphos. They have played at festivals such as Elements in the United States.
