Neon Pumps grew up on 80s pop, Motown and country music before branching out into punk, ska punk, trance and balearic house as a teenager. During university she was immersed in cellar raves and festival culture with particular emphasis on drum and bass, dubstep, ambient and psytrance. It was during this time at university that she first learned to DJ, messing around with a mini Hercules in the early hours in hazy student digs. As a generalist and explorer by nature, she loves discovering and deep diving into new veins of musical styles, genres and history. She has been a prolific mixtape and playlister since recording from radio onto cassettes as a child in the early 90s, mashing up mini discs through the 00s and then finally going digital with windows media player and Spotify playlists. The devastating loss of a 1TB external hard drive full of music around 2010 will be forever mourned. For a long time playing beyond the bedroom as a DJ felt unattainable, with no access to club equipment to learn and a nomadic lifestyle. After settling in Stroud and being inspired by the open and collaborative creative culture there, plus active support for bringing more womxn into DJing, Neon Pumps finally took the plunge and booked some studio sessions with DJ and mentor Robbie Duncan at local creative hub Stroud Valley Artspace, which allowed her to gain confidence on the club standard equipment and start playing out locally. Since beginning to play out professionally in 2023 Neon Pumps has been booked alongside acts including: Marshall Jefferson, Horse Meat Disco, Denham Audio, Echo Juliet, Steve Davis & Kavus Torabi and JOICEY Collective as well as performing as Boss Morris DJs with the all-female morris collective currently bringing morris dancing to the mainstream through performances at Glastonbury and The Brit Awards. As a DJ, Neon Pumps sets out to guide audiences on a musical field trip adventure with surprising genre-bending twists and turns, tracking the DNA of different musical styles, classic songs and samples, and the evolution of artists. The vibe is bouncy, pumping beats, electro boops, warm neon colours and bass rich - balancing a blend of familiarity and novelty for the dance floor. Sometimes playful, sometimes soulful, sometimes funny, sometimes fierce. She began producing music in 2023 and her first official release came out on Sound Records in February 2024, a remix of Yarni's Red Meander. Watch this space for more releases in 2024....
