মm. (read: mwo, just like the bangla alphabet) is a DJ, curator and community organizer based in Dhaka & Vienna. They curate and mix DJ sets along historic and socio-cultural movements of sounds and music and, when possible, they try to evoke the listener's nostalgia. Their sets are percussion-driven, featuring genres, styles and rhythms from the global South with intentions to trace collaborative music histories across the larger region. Their sets are heavily inspired by diasporic movements, memories, and hybridities, and can feature genres ranging from bangla pop, batida, dancehall, baile funk and afrobeats to hip-hop, house, vogue cuts, kuduro, soca, jungle, hard percussions and techno, really depending on the mood and space. The style of music they play, they like to call it “south-on-south”, and they try to embed it in movements of club & dance influences from all over the world. It is really important for them to be always in conversation with the dance floor and, often, critical of how such spaces are made and for whom, with a tendency to center queerness and reclaim ideas of nightlife and dance from Euro-American club culture. They are also an academic, and their research is at the intersection of gender/sexuality, art and politics, exploring potentials of decolonial praxis. And in that spirit, they am also one of the founding members of Karkhana Collective, a not-for-profit artists' collective based in Dhaka where they explore critical and accessible practice of music, sound and dancefloor organizing. One of their long-running projects is the Ghurni Listening Sessions (@ghurni_karkhana), where they want to work towards communal practice of building accessible, safer, and locally contextualized dancefloors. They also think about what can make this artistic practice accessible - across class, gender, social location etc. - and how they can pool collective resources to do so in the conditions of Dhaka city. They are also a founding member of Spice Mixers (@spice_mixers), a collective based in Vienna that works with music, dance, humor and art to create BIPOC (Black, Indigenous & People of Colour)-focused spaces where different cultural and social experiences of diaspora and migrant communities in Vienna can be celebrated.
