Merem is born and raised in Istanbul. During his early childhood, he had been exposed to his father’s vast music collection (vinyls, cds and cassettes), ranging from earliest electronic abstract music, psychedelic rock, soundtracks and contemporary classical music. He started getting piano classes at age 4 and kept playing until 8, performing in couple of youth concerts. He played the piano until he was able to nail down Chopin’s Op.27 No.2. Then, after her teacher moved abroad, he suddenly stopped. Early teenage years, Merem and his childhood crew wanted to start a band with the rising interest in indie rock, jazz and blues. He played the bass for the next five years actively and participated in talent shows and concerts, playing the likes of Gary Moore’s ‘Still Got the Blues’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’. Couple of years passed with a lot of confusion, listening so actively and repetitively to music from hip/hop, rap to rock, jazz, classical. And only then, he discovered electronic music among the rest. At age 16, after going in and out to all conventional night clubs with fake ID’s in Istanbul, he started organising parties with friends, and started to get behind the decks very soon after. Merem moved into New York for his studies at age 18. At that time, Merem was still discovering electronic music and sharing them with friends at house parties. He immediately fell into the scene and always kept an open mind, knowing his musical past and taste. He did not want to rush anything, all he did was going to parties and then going to a record store the next day. As Merem and O.BEE have been childhood friends living together in New York, the gang started to throw after parties, non-stop. He kept digging, and kept sharing his tunes with friends in the after parties. Within the next few years, Merem got engaged with many scenemakers in Brooklyn and NY, holding down residency in Sheik ‘N’ Beik, leading the event production in Resolute, and working as music buyer for re-known NYC record shop Halcyon; all led him to become one of the figures in the underground scene of Brooklyn. Merem has spun and organised events with the likes of Margeret Dygas, Olga Korol, O.BEE, Tomas Station, Audio Werner, Christopher Ledger, Momo Trosman, Argenis Brito, Jorge Gamarra, Dandy Jack and so on. Couple more years later, he decided to go back to his hometown Istanbul, after a truly inspirational south american tour. He has played in 7 different cities in Colombia, Argentina and Uruguay during his 3 months tour. He decided it was the right time to bring his musical foundation back to his origins and build up the scene with his fellows. Then came the birth of Low Key Recordings. A fresh mindset in the scene is introduced by Merem and his three co-founders, Jalo, Jemmi and Baban. Low key is originated in Budapest and will be having parties and workshops around the world, in low-key environments.
