Me, I’m Counting is the solo project of Durham-based electronic artist Nick Williams, who constructs psychedelic, rhythm-forward techno and beat music using modular synthesizers and other analog gear. Drawing from a background in shoegaze, psych rock, and experimental electronics, his sound explores repetition, tension, and texture—built live and in the moment from tangled signal paths and instinct. Before launching Me, I’m Counting, Williams played guitar in the shoegaze outfit Free Electric State and the psych-rock freakout ensemble Prisms, known for their blown-out performances and for-machine addiction. He also performs in the modular synth duo Action Group alongside longtime collaborator Alex Maiolo, where the focus shifts toward heady party music. In addition to performing, Williams is the founder of BOOM Club, a nonprofit electronic music arts organization dedicated to providing access to high-quality electronic instruments, creative resources, and workshops for artists at all levels. His work—in both sound and community—reflects a commitment to making experimental music tangible, accessible, and thrillingly alive.
