Matthias “Matty” Heilbronn
Biography
DJ/producer/remixer Matthias Matty Heilbronn has established himself as a formidable presence in the international dance / electronic music landscape. His distinctive style earned him a spot on DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs In The World where they described him as one of the true unsung heroes of house music, and in DJ Magazine’s Top 10 Covermount CDs of the Decade, Matthias earned the # 1 position of the decade for compiling and mixing his seminal Wave/Chez/Naked compilation. As a DJ, Matthias has graced the decks at some of the world’s most premiere venues including London’s Ministry of Sound, The End and Fabric; Uk’s Southport Weekender; New York’s legendary Palladium, Limelight, Twilo, Sound Factory Bar and Body & Soul; Paris’ Respect Is Burning; Ibiza’s Pacha & Space; Berlin’s Dschungel and Tresor; Sao Paulo’s Serenas, Frankfurt’s Cocoon and Tokyo’s Spacelab Yellow and Air. Although renowned amongst heads for his soulful garage house sound, his DJ sets reveal a much broader cross-section of influences, described in Britain’s 7 Magazine as a spellbindingly eclectic set where his panoramic journey across often arbitrary musical genres, created a sense of New York, both past and present.
After being introduced to underground house music culture when he heard seminal DJ / producer Larry Levan at the legendary Paradise Garage, Matthias relocated from Germany to New York City in order to fully pursue his love of music. Through his job at Axis Studios, he learned engineering, programming and editing under the tutorship of mentor Francois K. He became roommates with house music icon Frankie Knuckles and would soon have the privilege to meet and work with Larry Levan and Tom Moulton.
In the early 90’s Matthias teamed up with his partner Mike Delgado, whom he had met through working with Todd Terry, to form Deep Zone Productions. Together they composed and produced some of the biggest Garage tracks of the time. Blessed to have apprenticed with several of the culture's most talented (and successful) innovators, he had earned a place among them as a peer. Matthias soon started co- producing, remixing and arranging music alongside Todd Terry, Tommy Musto, Danny Tenaglia and Francois K. As one of New York’s most in-demand editors and programmers, Matty worked on songs by Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Boys II Men and SWV earning a string of awards.
It’s a cliché to talk about an artist that’s been in the thick of the industry for more than two decades as “underrated”, but it’s staggering to take a step back and draw in all that Matthias Heilbronn has done in his career. He’s worked with nearly everyone there is to work with, and has remixed major label artists including Soul II Soul, Jill Scott, Mary J Blige, Donna Summer, Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Solange, Maxwell, Tom Jones, Toni Braxton, Labelle, Randy Crawford, Anastacia, Everything But The Girl, Bootsy Collins, Stevie Nicks and Roy Ayers.
After meeting Mousse T. and Boris Dlugosch at the WMC in Miami, Matthias joined the Peppermint Jam crew in Germany, set up camp on both sides of the pond and started traveling back and forth to DJ and produce more than ever before. Peppermint Jam’s focus was on the Major Label aspect of his career, while back in the States, Matthias crafted II Deep Productions to stay connected to the underground house scene, writing, producing and remixing an array of essential house anthems for some of dance music’s most influential labels, including Defected, NRK, Pokerflat, Wave Music, Naked Music, Suburban, Masters at Work, King Street, Z Records, SAW, Compost, Maya, Inhouse, Electric Minds, and artists like Abstract Truth, James Ingram, Robert Owens, Dajae, Ultra Nate, Tiefschwarz, Monique Bingham, Joeski, Inaya Day, Todd Terry and Dimitrie From Paris to name but a few.
As a DJ Matthias Heilbronn keeps pushing the boundaries, every time he steps behind the decks. He manages to flawlessly move from Soulful house to Detroit Techno or 80’s Disco Classics without missing a beat. He believes that understanding and embracing the past will open the path to the future, whether that is through the music he plays or the technology that he uses. No set ever sounds the same, but one thing is guaranteed; he always knows how to work a crowd.
Equipped with a keen knowledge of the past and a constant push for the future, Matthias’ remains at the forefront of Global Dance Music as one of the most enduring and versatile talents.
