Biografía
For over 40 years, she has inspired selectors and DJs alike with her timeless musical journeys spanning decades and genres, including classics, downtempo bass, all styles of dub, and future beats. Linett remains a vital fixture in the contemporary underground music scene, hosting sought-after curated vinyl listening sessions and taking on massive milestones like an open-to-close 7-hour set in the ballroom at The Palais for the Rhythm Section 15th Anniversary.
She was nominated for the DJ Mag Best of British Awards' Underground Hero category in 2023, celebrating her major contributions to the industry through LIN KAM ART, her leadership role as a Board Director at Notting Hill Carnival, and dedicated mentorship platforms like the Original Sounds Collective, which actively champion, mentor, and elevate women and underrepresented voices in sound system culture worldwide.
Linett gained widespread recognition for her grassroots efforts, highlighting the importance of community empowerment and inclusivity within the music scene. She is regularly invited to speak on music culture such as the Amsterdam Dance Event and TEDx.
For over 40 years Linett has been championing sound system culture from producing memorable takeovers through her company LIN KAM ART cultural spaces such as The British Museum and The British Library.
Her numerous press interviews include; Sky News, Channel 4 News, BBC news & radio, Notion, Prospect & The Face magazines, The Guardian, Evening Standard and Independent newspapers.
Linett custom, hand-built sound systems represent a deliberate break from tradition, intentionally fusing heavy sonic power with natural materials, visual art and community care. Rather than following a generic CAD template or blueprint, Linett designs her rigs from scratch, sketching out raw concepts by hand before collaborating with master carpenters and using high-end drivers to bring them to life.
Her most notable builds and interactive sound system concepts include:
1. The LIN KAM ART Custom Rig
This is her flagship, custom hand-built sound system. Distinctly stepping away from the standard black, industrial boxes common to the scene, her rig utilizes warm, natural materials to create a beautiful aesthetic that is as much a visual art piece as it is a wall of sound. It has been rolled out for massive street events, famously hosting a legendary 5-hour deep bass takeover with Deep Medi Musik at the Notting Hill Carnival.
2. LIN KAM ART BASSTONE MoYC
Built in collaboration with the Museum of Youth Culture and powered by Monitor Audio, this bespoke system was designed to challenge how people interact with sound. Linett envisioned this rig to pioneer a "relaxed and conscious" approach to the sound system experience, utilizing high-fidelity audio to promote an appreciation of a fully immersive sonic museum experience.
3. The BASSTONE Series (Audio-Visual Installations)
Linett has pushed the definition of what a sound system can be by building boundary-blurring interactive installations under her BASSTONE project:
• Bass Tone Regeneration: A touring, surrealist sound-and-light installation. Built using a custom sound setup integrated with 3D moving light art and virtual reality concepts, it reimagines the relationship between human connection and the natural environment. It has toured over 10 venues and spaces.
• The Basstone Maypole: A fantastical, sci-fi-inspired "light and sound system". Rebuilding a traditional English folk custom from a carnival perspective, Kamala constructed a custom maypole that features school tannoy speakers on the crown, a thunderous bass bin at the bottom and programmed LED light strings instead of traditional ribbons.
Passing on the Craft: Sound System Futures
Through her company LIN KAM ART, Kamala doesn't just build systems herself; she actively demystifies the engineering process for the next generation. Initiatives like her Sound System Futures programme and youth residencies provide hands-on carpentry, speaker building and management experience to young people and underrepresented groups. Her mentorship programmes focus on bringing more women into the physical and technical side of sound system construction.
