Biografía

Having grown up in Germany, France and the UK, Maassen's international identity is palpably present throughout his work. Drawing on European electronic traditions as much as UK Jazz, his debut EP, “Lillies” (2021), has been described as comprising “hypnotic vocal loops and angular beats with jazz infused synths meandering lazily across the top” [Halcyon Wax]. Working at the interface of electronic and acoustic impressions, he displays a highly refined ability to craft surreal, otherworldly sounds that resonate with visceral familiarity in a broad range of intertwined emotions. On his upcoming debut album, "Inside Cycles” (spring 2024), Maassen explores his subjectivity in the digital worlds of the 2020s, increasingly integrating vocal performance into a distinctive and transcendental electronic style. The album sets an intention for 2024 and beyond, establishing a unique voice that is sure to mature into a household electronic name over the coming years. To accompany the release of "Inside Cycles", Maassen's electronic live show will be touring in UK/EU through 2024. Film directors Oscar McNab visualizes the track "Take Me To Space" in a striking AI-based take on contemporary digital existence. As a music producer, Maassen has worked with singer-songwriter Gigi Williams and the jazz/spoken word group Neo Arc, quickly gaining traction in the UK Jazz/Indie scene. He has also composed scores for a number of film and theatre productions, with selections at numerous international film festivals including Festival de Cannes Court Métrage, Firenze FilmCorti and Montecatini International Film Festival. Building on a spatial audio residency at IKLECTIK Art Lab and a series of group shows in Milan and London in 2023, Maassen has been expanding his music production practice to audio-visual installation formats, exploring human perception in the context of 21st-century environmental change. His project "Heart of a Glacier" was selected as a Finalist for the MUSE Digital Art Award 2023, as well as for the international LOM+you programme, which supports artistic endeavours promoting environmental justice. Maassen studied Geography at the University of Oxford before completing a Master degree in Electronic and Produced Music at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he received the Rose Lawrence Horner’s Award as well as a Starred Award for his final portfolio Past performances include Avalon Café, Next Door Records, AMP Studios, Modern Art Oxford and Milton Court Concert Hall, as well as radio shows on Balamii and 1020 Radio and frequent collaborations with the BONSE1 collective.
