About me? This is hard. To start it all off in this fascinating industry, and it is an industry, I dj'd and assisted in the workings of two well known pirate radio stations at the offset of my career in 1992 for Touch FM & Girls Fm in London, the latter of which was in very close competition with a well known radio station still successfully broadcasting today. (It's not easy installing the transmitter mast 30 floors up on a council block with 5 inch snow and sideways winds. A real introduction especially when I was only 17 years old and about to throw a whitey. After this incredible insight playing live only to a hand full of pirate broadcasters and an unknown amount of listeners I took on requests to play at house parties, small pub gigs, more air time and illegal gigs around London and finally got my chance to perform at M.O.S with the promoters Smartie Party and was soon after whisked of to Ibiza to play at Cafe Del Mar (Touch FM) for the workers parties as resident for 5 months throughout the island's more hedonistic season. This was a priceless experience and was to engrain my passion for dj'ing for the rest of my life. Back in London as my season abroad was coming to a close many new faces had appeared and it was my time to use this experience to get back into London's extremely competitive club circuit. I continued working for similar events but I wanted to look slightly further afield to keep in touch with the people I'd met earlier. Mid way through the 90's I was dj'ing for Cookies & Cream who I'd met in Ibiza earlier and was spotted by Shades Of Rhythm producer Nick Slater who took me on to his home town back in Peterborough and I started playing house parties and clubs to build a following outside of London. By now I was playing what was known then and now as UK House which was a big step from the beautifully crafted, vocal orientated music that I was previously playing in Ibiza the earlier season. This was far more accessible for dj's across the board to be able to push the UK house scene forward on our own turf and with it many new dj's came to join the soiree and the battle begun again to get the right events. By this time I was playing alongside some incredible dj's such as the legendary John OO Fleming, Nicky Blackmarket, Graham Gold, Vivien Marky, Simon Hill & Skol & Roosta. I honestly felt like a rookie. Even as the stepping stone this was to be for me, my next few years were to be really tough and slightly resented having been away to Ibiza for so long. Bits of the season would have been the advisable way to go, however at that stage of my career how could I refuse. By now it was in the latter stages of the 90's and the House scene was really well formed. In London we had M.O.S going full circle with house and re-investing in the pioneering 'US' exports such as Frankie Knuckles, and Marshal Jefferson and an ever growing underground scene spread all across London. Vauxhall clubs smashed out hard house and trance and the gay scene exploded, in North London the rave scene was still as credible as it's original inception, and you just had to be there to hear the music being explored by all. These were exciting times for any house dj for sure & vinyl was still the industry standard in the booths for some time to come. Next for me was around the noughties to bring me back full circle and I soon realized that to stay ahead I needed to re-invent myself and I was happy with the choices I'd made musically but I needed to continue exploring. I was now able to travel with time on my side and chose the journey to Australia where the party scene was really getting started. Under advise by a good friend, Australia was calling out for dj's to fill newly built clubs and entertain fresh new crowds, and my style fitted right in. I accepted the invite and booked a one way ticket to aus to see this happening first hand from the start. I took so many records onto that flight that when I had to weigh in my luggage I was way over, so I chose to wear all the clothes I had and ditch the rest so that I could get the records over. At one stage a few weeks later a friend approached me and asked me if I'd like to raid the quicksilver shop for some new clothes! I didn't even realize I had the same shirts on for so long. In Melbourne I'd landed a residency at a huge new club called Salt, this was to be my new home for the next year. I got Involved in the proceedings of the events and design of the nights. I played alongside the US legend that is Josh Wink as our guest dj & The Producers taking centre stage to a 3'500 capacity club. We had incredible fun. I worked to keep up and lead the way musically and took great pride in watching this new Melbourne scene take off so quick, during which I played for a few other events one of which being One Love and also got invited to regularly play for the Quicksilver Pool parties on the coast. That year flew by and I returned to London to gather my thoughts. Currently I am still fortunate enough to call London my home and I continue to enjoy and purvey this amazing sonic art. I am now 1/3 of the [ tek ] deep house and techno parties team and can be found playing around the South West coast at our once monthly residency in Weston Super Mare or more locally to some in Shoreditch, London at Cargo at our 2nd [tek ] residency.
