Lara Sarkissian is an electronic musician, DJ and broadcaster born and raised in San Francisco; currently based in Los Angeles. She has released with labels Tresor, Knekelhuis, CLUB CHAI, All Centre, TT, SOS Music and more. Sarkissian founded experimental electronic dance platform CLUB CHAI; a record label and event series with an international network of artists that artistically hybridized and archived non-Western sonic worlds within electronic dance culture. She is currently a resident on NTS Radio, a home for her narrative-style programs showcasing dance/electronic from around the globe, and mixing across dub, techno, house, dnb, bass, jungle, noise, hailing from the underground and a reflection of her collaborations with artists in the respected genres. She has DJ'd nights for Tresor, Hyperdub, Unsound Festival, MoMA PS1, Roskilde Festival, Boiler Room broadcasts and more. Sarkissian's electroacoustic music takes on experimental approaches in sequencing Armenian folk instruments and samples, underscored with an electronic rhythmic pulse that draws from a deep appreciation for club music, industrial, noise and ambient. She scores video, film and immersive AV installations. Her production is shaped by immersive experiences in physical spaces of spirituality, natural environments, dance clubs - spaces intended for communal gathering and where sound connects spirits through architecture, chant or movement. She has created her own unique process of synthesizing duduk as percussion, bass and voice; and makes use of field recordings, hymns, writing, voice, digital audio, analog synth hardware, drum machines, Armenian and Iranian film/music samples. Sarkissian invites listeners into the intersection of her worlds, fantasies and stories; blurring the lines between spaces, reference points and contexts. Her sets twist elements of contemporary/traditional, into forward thinking, future and non-linear sonic electronic landscapes.
