Julia Dèng Hànzú, born in Chongqing, China and now living in London, is a multimedia artist/experimental musician/sound therapist with mixed educational backgrounds in Design and Economics who practises a post-disciplinary approach. Her works, featuring frequent use of sound, include but are not limited to the form of performances, installations, audios, moving/static images, texts and curated events, while inner emotions as reflection to the outer concrete/abstract environment are recurring themes. Under the influence of her training in traditional Chinese instruments like guzheng, pipa, ruan from the age of 8, Julia applies extended techniques on a variety of plucked-string instruments, frequently combined with electronics and objects or other art forms. She is interested in textures and spaces, and devotes to explore the physicality and locality within live performances. As an emerging artist, Julia had performed in many cities including London, Huddersfield, Cardiff, Ruthin, Aberdeen, Berlin, Freiburg, Trier, Luxemburg etc, and just finished a full China tour in June this year. She is also the composer for Burnt Butterfly 2.0, a 2024 Fringe production. Her performative installation work Con-current: Tuning Intervals had previously been exhibited at the White Chapel Gallery and was commented by Mialondonblog as ‘having simultaneously bridged the gap between analogue and digital technologies and created a cultural bridge between China and Europe’.
