Biografía
João brings an immense amount of benevolence into everything he does. Known to his immediate circle as a modern day Marco Polo, he fuses his cultural journey and upbringing deliberately into his sets as a DJ. Born in Trinidad &Tobago and raised there until his family departed the small island for a short 3 year stint in Jakarta, Indonesia followed by half a decade in the busy city of Hong Kong. While living in Trinidad, he was able to grow in a culture that thrives on dance music (Soca, Dancehall, Disco). His move to Hong Kong as a teen exposed his eyes and ears to various international sounds thus creating a worldly point of view.
A move to Atlanta, Georgia after University in 2007 provided an avenue for João to build and connect with like minded music lovers; especially record diggers and aficionados. July 1st 2019 he joined forces with longtime friend and compadre, Dan Villouta aka Elio Stereo to launch Proper Taste!
Proper Taste is a deejay duo/collective coming out of Atlanta with Caribbean decent. Their passion for vinyl got them a jump start in circles where collectors and other experienced players came to feed the urge for deep/soul sometimes tech. Not long after earning their trust, opportunities to play shows before the likes of Mike Huckaby, Kai Alcé, and Rick Wade came about, and today they enjoy monthly residencies at the legendary Sound Table and recent favorite MidCity Cafe.
Their collective approach has brought communities together in the name of love, good spirit and respect for one’s individual proper taste to celebrate culture in this domain. It comes as no surprise to see supporters of their sound representing their involvement with this celebration by wearing custom merch.
For the future, much is yet to be written. The launch of Proper Taste Records approaches in early 2020 (look out for promos, releases will be strictly vinyl) as they mutually claim interest in production with one of the members being professionally trained in audio engineering and released a few singles of his own.

Much Love,
João
