DJ 'JAZZHEADCHRONIC' MICKEY SMITH has been successfully DJ hosting and promoting his own progressive - eclectic, funk, soul and jazz fused globalistic events for over 30 years. Starting in 1991 in South East Asia where he is still known as The Godfather of The Hong Kong Underground scene. Running successful club and concert seasons in unique venues for 7 years in the early to mid 90’s.
From The Rebirth of Cool Monthly events at numerous [100 growing to 2000 capacity] venues [which he solo hosted to capacity crowds for 5 years straight] to his Live Cool Vibe Review concert seasons 1 + 2 with the likes of Gil Scott-heron, Lee Scratch Perry, Lonnie Liston Smith, The James Taylor Quartet, Galliano, Corduroy, D*Note / Outside, + More. As well as DJ hosting and promoting one off special events with some of the world's leading artists DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, James Lavelle, Norman Jay, Snowboy, The Herbaliser, DJ Food, United Future Organisation, Kyoto Jazz Massive ……. the list goes on.
Having kick started a new healthy thriving underground Music scene in Hong Kong - 1997 saw Jazzheadchronic return to the UK and the start of numerous now legendary sessions across London town. Including The 40+ Artists weekly Armaghetto Eclectic Live + Spoken Word Variety show at Brixtons Fridge and Clash at The Scala and Brixton’s Mass in the late 90’s.
Label Clashes with DJs and bands from cutting edge labels Reinforced, Urban Takeover, Skam, Mannafest, Rotation and Pussyfoot to one on one DJ and Club Collective Battles with e.g. David Rodigan Vs 100% Dynamite and Mobo Club Of The Year Winners Fresh & Funky Vs Rotation. Lest we forget the 40+ Artist, 2 Day Resurrected stage hosted and promoted by Jazzheadchronic at Notting Hill Carnival 2000. That years most popular Live stage by far with Saijan Supa Crew [FR], Attica Blues, Marc Mac [4 Hero], Badmarsh + Shri, Omar and of course Jazzheadchronic + scores more sleighing the 3000+ audience for days.
After taking a couple of years out to set up a new Creative Arts Humanitarian Company The Chronic Love Foundation [CLF] as well as form and tour Live Duo The Culture Chronics alongside Drum FMs Marque Gilmore. A chance meeting with Peckham Vision Campaigner Eileen Conn in 2003 led to Mickey and The CLF joining Peckham Vision to save a huge warehouse that was set for demolition [historically called The Bussey Building].
In order to save said building Mickey set up The CLF Art Cafe [also known as The Bussey Building] on 1 floor of the building and started promoting and hosting numerous arts, music and theatre events - which would eventually lead to the saving of the building, the venue expanding to over 5 floors and it fast becoming one of London’s leading centres of The Creative Arts.
The CLF Art Cafe playing host to [A Jazzheadchronic programmed] on-going season of the absolute cream of the worlds underground DJ, Live and Theatrical talent. The Legendary John Morales to Rich Medina, Ashley Beedle and Disclosure via Ronny Size, Afrika Bambaata, Don Letts, Jerry Dammers, MJ Cole, Bestival, The Royal Court Theatre + too many more to mention.
Today you can catch Jazzheadchronic Mickey Smith at The CLF / Bussey as host of nights like….the worlds biggest soul night - the weekly Saturday 3/4 floor The South London Soul Train where Mickey regularly plays 5-7 Hr all night sets to a capacity audience and welcomes legendary Live + DJ guests as diverse as Fred Wesley & The New JBs, Brian Jackson & The New Midnight Band, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Bad Rabbits, The Fatback Band, Beggars & Co, Da Lata, JTQ, Wonderlush, Riot Jazz Brass Band, Snowboy & The Latin Section, Norman Jay MBE, Jazzie B, Rich Medina, DJ Spinna + More to the 1st floor.
You can also catch him at the Impromptu Funk Soul Rare Groove Review + many more events that he hosts and promotes. Djaying alongside legendary artists like The Jungle Brothers, Mark De Clive Lowe, Seiji, Wunmi, Adamski, Omar, Congo Natty and Adrian Sherwood and performing at numerous local and International events / festivals like Bestival, Soundwave Croatia, Somerset House, The National, Royal Festival Hall, SLST Festival, SLST Weekender, Rio Loco Festival Toulouse + more.
Renowned for his positively aggressive and highly charged eclectic good time sets of soul, funk, groove, motown, disco, latin and or future sets of broken to afro beat, jungle to drum & bass + hip hop - One things for sure, whenever or wherever Jazzheadchronic Mickey Smith plays, the dance floor blows up and the crowd always, but always feel it.
