Invisible City
Biografía
Invisible City is the pseudonym of the Canadian DJ, Gary Abugan. Starting out as an online shop and reissue label (Invisible City Editions), the brand has expanded over the years with a Toronto based brick-and-mortar shop (Invisible City Record Shop), online community radio (Invisible City Radio), and event series (Invisible City Presents). With a focus on the overlooked, cross-over genre fluidity, and often questionable music, Invisible City is about building community and having a good time.
"You won't find a more fun, deeper night out anywhere." - Caribou / Daphni
"Both as a DJ and via his impeccable Invisible City reissue label, Gary Abugan brings new life to the disparate vinyl oddities. Keen to give these unknown and inaccessible records airplay, Invisible City Sound System's sets are as much about celebrating the overlooked music of the past as they are about just straight up having a good time." - Moony Habits / Restless Nights LA
Invisible City has it roots in Canadian soil, tirelessly searching all over the world for the overlooked and often questionable, providing seamless mixes for Dekmantel, Beats In Space, Test Pressing, LN-CC and Red Bull Music Academy. Invisible City cut a reputation for creative DJ sets, and selling out shows at Tokyo clubs, Montreal Loft Parties, Melbourne’s Music Festival and Womadelaide with ecstatic dancers. It earned them respect from global dance scene giants Moodymann, Theo Parrish, DJ Harvey, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Giles Peterson, Caribou,Young Marco, I-F, Antal, Music From Memory and Four Tet. As a valuable addition to the IC DJ sets, the creation of the Invisible City Editions label features impeccable releases from forgotten and obscure heroes – starting with the Trinidadian soul pioneer Michael Boothman, Zambia’s mythical AOR band Witch, as well as Stephen Encinas’ seminal Disco Illusion reissue. Be it Beverly Glenn Copelands' private ambient jazz cassette ...keyboard fantasies or ex Fela Kuti manager Oluko Imo's spiritual spaced out pslam "Praise Jah" you can always expect the unexpected. Invisible City have gone deeper than most, traveling all over the world seeking deleted, rare and forgotten vinyl. As a result, the label has been praised for redefining how we interact with the past. Invisible City prides itself on curating and collaborating with artists, and community. Established in 2012, it's now become a brick-and-mortar record shop, community radio station and has revived its roots as a local party soundsystem based in Toronto.
