Jan Ickx started as a Hip Hop DJ under the name of dexter89/deckstar89 in 1995 in his hometown Essen. There he was closely connected to acts like Toys'R'us and Währt das Echte, for whome he became one of two DJs. During the following years Jan played at various Hip Hop jams and clubs, gaining reputation beyond city limits for the first time. Back then he also had a focus on incorporating elements of turntablism into club sets, while also gaining interest in the Hip Hop samples' originals. After moving to Bonn in 1998 Jan Ickx was, along with DJ Boogie and DJ Taubenmann (who later became DJ Machrome), founder of the well known turntable crew AFDC (Alles für die Cutz). Later joined by DJ Shifroc and DJ Al Martino AFDC became an influential Mixtape label for the german Hip Hop scene. It was 1999 when Jan released his first Soul and Funk mix entitled Sonntagsbrötchen under the AFDC label. The following years Jan's interest shifted more and more towards soul and funk classics. Having moved to the city of Wuppertal in the meantime, it was only a matter of time until Jan bumped into DJ Ronnie Evangelista at the legendary 45 rpm club in 2004, where both became a resident dj team. Having finally met their soulbrother both DJs decided to form a collective, The FunkExpress, which was strongly influenced and supported by DJ Soul Rabbi. In the following years they resided at Essen's Capri Bar and played countless clubs all over Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands as a back to back DJ team. Jan Ickx now lives in Berlin.
