If you’ve spent time in club land in South Africa, you’ve no doubt heard the name GForce. But not many people know just how long this man has been buying, collecting and playing records. It all began in the mid-80’s when clubs were still known as discotheques and G rushed out every weekend to his local, sitting next to the box all night watching every mix as the DJ weaved his magic. Totally mesmerised by the Italo Disco, New Beat and Hi NRG records being spun by his heroes, there was no turning back. And shortly after, during his military service, he built his first DJ set up. Eventually he ended up playing in the clubs he grew up in and before he knew it he connected with a group of individuals who changed the face of clubbing in SA forever. In the 90’s Rave Culture exploded and the youth found unity and freedom of expression through dance and fashion. Together with his new partners G helped pioneer the early warehouse parties in Johannesburg and later went on to open the infamous 4th World, IT & The Shelter. Later a new and unconventional youth radio station named Y-FM set up shop in the heart of Bertram’s Valley and GForce became the resident DJ for the Saturday night dance show with the Y ASK Y posse. As a partner in the ground breaking House Africa records he was an instrumental part of house music culture as we know it today. A few highlights along his DJ journey include: representing South Africa at Rave City in Munich with pioneers Carl Cox and Frankie Knuckles, winning the SA DJ championships and bringing home a brand new set of SL1200’s. Playing at Desert Storm, opening for Jamiroquai and having Depeche Mode turn up at one of his events. Over the years he’s also been responsible for bringing out some of the best underground DJs to our shores. This has a lot to do with his role in curating the music at Rustler’s Valley. He was in fact the first DJ ever to play at Rustlers and even though the festival is no longer, it remains close his heart as it influenced the kind of music he plays out today. It’s a trademark Gforce groove, a style that comes from spending 29 years collecting everything from house and techno to alternative, indie, nuwave, disco, electro, rave and everything in between. In his own words GForce describes his favourite part about playing this style of music in clubs: “There’s a moment when you and the crowd become one with the music and suddenly they’re as open to you as you are to them, and that’s where the musical adventure begins”. A musical adventure that TOYTOY clubbers know all too well because when asked what keeps him playing week in and week out he says: “TOYTOY first and foremost. From the crowd to the team of passionate DJ’s behind the night, it’s the shared vision that I use as constant inspiration and a family I’m proud to be a part of”.
