GAZAEBAL is a Seoul-based sound artist whose practice redefines the boundaries of auditory experience through texture-focused compositions and immersive audio-visual installations. His works often explore the subtle tension between analog warmth and digital precision, crafting sonic environments that challenge perception and invite physical and emotional resonance. Beginning his creative journey as a sound engineer in New York in the 1990s, GAZAEBAL worked with artists such as Wu-Tang Clan and Janet Jackson. Returning to Korea, he released several techno albums, including MULL (2004), which became the first Korean track to top the UK’s TuneIn techno chart. After a successful run in the electronic and pop scene—most notably producing the club hit "엉덩이" for the Banana Girl project—he shifted directions in 2008, founding the media art collective Tacit Group with composer Jang Jaeho. While Tacit Group earned international acclaim for its algorithmic performances and interactive sound installations, GAZAEBAL also pursued a deeply personal solo path. From 2011 to 2020, he developed a body of work now compiled in the album Texture Music, which explores the evolution of sonic texture from isolated elements to dense, woven audio tapestries. This exploration culminated in the critically recognized piece UN/Readable Sound (2023), a dystopian audio-visual performance that was selected as “Work of the Year” by the Korea Arts Council. In 2024, GAZAEBAL presented SOUND : AL, a monumental sound sculpture that utilizes modular synthesis, sine waves, and lighting mapped in real time. This work continues his ongoing inquiry into sound as a sculptural and perceptual medium, inviting listeners into imagined futures communicated non-verbally. GAZAEBAL is also the founding director of WeSA (Web Sound Art), Korea’s only audio-visual festival, dedicated to building a sustainable ecosystem for experimental sound and media artists. Over the past decade, WeSA has hosted international performers, residencies, and educational programs, expanding the local and global reach of Korea’s new media art scene. Through both individual and collective practices, GAZAEBAL continues to push the expressive limits of sound, technology, and performance, creating work that resists easy interpretation but rewards deep listening and embodied experience.
