Garupa is the project of Gui Serra and Mathas (Matheus Sampaio), two long-time Brazilian diggers and collectors who have spent over a decade immersed in records, research and sound exploration. What started as a passion for collecting and sharing music organically grew into something more serious in 2021, pushed not only by their own devotion to music but also by the encouragement of friends who had been asking for their selections to leave the living room and hit the dancefloor. In Portuguese, “garupa” means the backseat of a motorcycle — a place where you take someone along for the ride. That imagery reflects the essence of the project: bringing people together, carrying stories and forgotten sounds forward, and reframing them in a contemporary way. Garupa is also a gear in motion, an engine of connection — a meeting point where different people and cultures revolve around one common purpose: music. Their sets unfold across contrasting dimensions. By day, they drift through balearic textures, warm currents of house and soul, grooves of funk and jazz — music shaped by light and movement. By night, they dive into hypnotic and progressive territories, weaving dense, trippy layers that push towards altered states and collective release. The constant dialogue between brightness and intensity defines their signature: a spectrum where discovery is always at the center. As Brazilians, their cultural background also informs this openness — a mix of identities, histories and sounds that naturally invites crossing borders and blending influences.
