With just a year in the music industry, Emily Nash has come out swinging. Her debut singles, all released in 2021, have racked up plays on Radio 1, Capital and Kiss; earnt her support and covers on leading dance music playlists including the UK’s biggest electronic playlist MINT, and led to her being included on both Beatport and Amazon’s prestigious “Ones To Watch” features for 2022. Newly signed to dance music institution Ministry of Sound, Emily’s first release on the label, “Garden”, lands on 14th January 2022, kicking off what is set to be a huge year for her. And all before she turns 21! Emily has also seen success with her acclaimed remixes for Navos and Little Mix, and has even released a drum’n’bass remix of her own track ‘Falling’. Her tightly crafted, feel-good crossover house sound earnt her a Mini Mix on Danny Howard’s radio show, and after making her DJ debut in summer 2021, she has chalked up gigs at Creamfields, Leeds Festival, Ministry, and most recently Tobacco Dock for New Year’s Eve 2021. She’s performed with artists ranging from Meg Ward, Elliot Adamson and Loco Dice through to Jonas Blue, Jax Jones and Fisher. Emily’s parents are old school ravers who used to play the old Ministry compilations around the house where she grew up in Kidderminster. It’s also a family tradition to all go to Glastonbury together; her mum went when she was pregnant with her and took her along at the tender age of 9 months for her first Glasto experience. It wasn’t until she was 15 and decided to go and see some of the dance music acts, Camelphat specifically, that DJing and producing crystalised as a possibility for her own life. After not getting her Maths GCSE and so being unable to go to sixth form, a tutor put her in a music production class. From then on in, she was hooked. After college, she would come home and watch endless YouTube tutorials on music production tips and tricks, drinking in all the knowledge she could. Emily finished college and worked at Tesco, gathering herself for where she wanted to go next. She then signed a few singles with Stress Records. ‘Mind’, ‘Pressure’ and ‘Falling’ veer into a markedly different direction from the dark techno sound of her first self-released single ‘In The Dance’. They’re filled with sunshine, evoking Ibiza house and feel-good Balearic beats guaranteed to make you dance; they reflect her own happy-go-lucky personality back into the world. For all her success so far, her music making process is relatively simple. With her current small bedroom setup, she starts with a vocal and builds the track around it. If a vocal doesn’t come to her, “I start with a really catchy bass that as soon as it plays everyone will be like, oh I know what that song is.” Though she says she herself can’t sing, the goal is to work with more vocalists in the future. She’s now managed by The Weird & Wonderful, and within a year of being with them, everything has changed for her. The Weird & Wonderful are the same team behind HE.SHE.THEY., and have managed the likes of Maya Jane Coles, Magda, KDA and Tale of Us amongst others. Her aim under their tutelage is to cross over and become a big female producer in the crossover dance music space, playing to bigger crowds and being a representation for women in music everywhere. Rather than feeling restrained by the label of ‘woman in music’, Emily sees it as more of a natural fact, a sign to keep doing what she’s doing and be a champion for women dance music producers in the crossover space.
