Biografía

There is a picture on Facebook (posted by his mother) at the age of about 4 or 5 standing next to what is probably his first wireless radio. This is good enough to be used as concrete evidence the he has been into music from a very early age. His Grandma tried to get him to take piano lessons, but he wasn’t really interested, and later on in high school while all his bro friends were taking phys-ed, he had to sit through boring music history lessons. He dropped the class as soon as he could, but later came to regret that decision. Slightly. As far as influences go, there wasn’t really a rich musical history in the family. His mother played the guitar, but she was also a bit of a party animal. This led to the fact that a few dj mix tapes and perhaps some trendy/underground late 80’s early 90’s electro pop made it’s way into Emil’s living room. He’d listen to them, and thus, some kinda of musical taste was instilled. Jump forward a few years, to when Emil discovered raving in the late 90’s. The sound of the time was hard house, and the top club in his home town was booking big international acts that left a marked impression on him. Or maybe it was just too many strong ecstasy pills - they were good in those days. One weekend though, he walked into the club and instead of the regular 145bpm ear bleed, they were playing - what he only later discovered was called - progressive house. This forever changed the way he would listen to music. Sometime around 2001 Emil did one of those stupid Technics DJ academy courses. Although he couldn’t afford to buy a pair of turntables, he’d show up to any party with his 25 odd records and play as long as people could bare to listen. It quite often got awkward. 2 years later he left South Africa for London. On his first night out in the big new city he went to see Sasha at Fabric. Stuff started to get better from here on out. Making good friends, spending many mornings in Room 1 listening to Craig Richards and Lee Burridge meld minds, and throwing the odd party around London’s East End helped to mature his sound to the point where people would actually end up having a good time listening to him play records. Over time, through consistently partying too much and mingling with what most people’s mothers would probably consider to be the wrong crowd, Emil has developed an ear for reasonably good tunes. He’s also lucky to be surrounded by a bunch of talented producer friends who give him their music every now and then - which he plays out enthusiastically. Emil currently resides in New York City, where he still bums around playing DJ sets whenever he gets the opportunity - mostly for his friends, cos they’re the only ones who will tolerate his stupid dance moves behind the DJ booth. He refuses to play in clothing stores or hair salons though. Also no flea markets. He currently holds down a residency with ...leaving new york...
