Edgar Um Bucholtz is a DJ, multi-media artist, event producer and improvising musician living in Pittsburgh, PA. Renown for his knowledge of and ability to DJ in a variety of musical genres, he is equally at ease playing a set of brand new post-dubstep house, a set of left-field disco/no wave, African and Turkish 70s funk, space-rock, roots reggae/dub and experimental electronics. His vinyl LP collection numbers to the many thousand. He is currently the resident DJ and music consultant for the Round Corner Cantina. Since 2010, he has been a music curator and general advisor for Pittsburgh's VIA Music and New Media Festival and the "VIA presents" monthly event series. He is the music coordinator for the Sprout Fund's annual Hothouse event. He has been an event consultant and DJ for multiple incarnations of the Carnegie Museum of Art's Carnegie International-most recently "Life On Mars: 55th Carnegie International" in 2008. He was a full-time event curator and resident DJ for the Andy Warhol Museum from 1999-2004. From 2004-2009, he held a monthly anything-goes jump-around dance party with a changing monthly theme called "Shame On..." with longtime friend DJ Cutups. He continues to frequently DJ at the Brillobox. For six years, he was a regular guest DJ at “Ya Dig?”, an old-school funk and soul night at Kelly’s Bar and Lounge. Some of the great talent he has had the pleasure to DJ with: Morgan Geist, Norm Talley, Daniel Wang, Matthew Dear, Jus-Ed, Bugz In The Attic, Jerome Sydenham, Philadelphyinz, Halo, Green Velvet, DJ/rupture, DJ Spooky, DJ Olive, Muttamassik, Eddie Stats, Titonton, Larry Tee, Tommie Sunshine, Girltalk. "I started playing records to make people dance while in highschool in rural southwestern Ohio. Hearing "Pump Up The Volume" by M|A|R|R|S blew my mind and made me want to get serious. I was a radio DJ on WRCT FM in Pittsburgh while I was an undergrad at Carnegie Mellon University (and for sometime after.) I started throwing experimental art + electronic music happenings in Pittsburgh in 1995. The first one was "The Final Comedown" featuring DJ Spooky, Badawi and Spinoza (who would go on to found The Bunker in NYC.) I started regularly DJ'ing house, techno and funk at bars and clubs in 1995: Kaya and Soba (with Spike R.I.P.); Zythos (now Z-Lounge); Metropol (upstairs lounge); and many others. I worked as a buyer for Hypervinyl Records (a DJ record store and label formerly in Pittsburgh) from 1996-1999. Outside of Pittsburgh, I've played records most frequently in NYC (for The Bunker and SoundLab) and in Miami, FL (1999-2004 for WMC.)" Edgar Um Bucholtz is a freelance curator of art and music events in Pittsburgh, PA. He is the music curator for The Shop Art and Performance Studio in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
