Whilst his current sound is firmly rooted in the realms of house and techno, Dustin’s formative years were spent hooked on pirate radio, soundtracked by the hardcore and jungle frequencies pushed by legendary London stations Kool and Dream FM. After copping his first set of decks aged just 13, his preferences transitioned from drum ‘n’ bass to garage, and then later to the inescapable draw of the nascent dubstep scene. After making the leap to production in 2007, Dustin notched up several releases under various different aliases, and despite flitting between genre boundaries, emerged with a distinct style typified by a wholesome, dusty flex that emanated from his early influences. Following an eye-opening visit to Berlin, Dustin’s output began to find form, and his sound crystallized around the incessant chug of 4/4, combining inspiration from the pared-down grooves of artists like Dennis Ferrer and Moodymann with deep textures into warm, nuanced tracks underpinned by a distinct garage swing. Recently, Dustin has been channelling his broad musical tastes into a variety of projects, including Low Bias, a mix series that seeks to capture the intuitive fun of adolescent mixing sessions, committing 90 minute vinyl-only sets to cassette tape. Meanwhile, the newly-formed “Dustin Funk Ensemble” indulges his penchant for all things 80s, fusing live instrumentation and vocals with heavyweight analog basslines into devastating synth-funk jams. Dustin’s début EP recently arrived the esteemed label Nixwax, with a number of follow-ups hot on its heels.
