Dualist Inquiry
Biografía
A cultural trailblazer at the cusp of an exciting new chapter with his third full-length album, Sahej Bakshi aka Dualist Inquiry is a pioneer of the Indian alternative music scene. Frequently dubbed the “poster boy of Indian electronica”, the producer, DJ and music entrepreneur shot to prominence and became one of Indian alternative music’s first crossover artists with the release of his 2013 debut LP ‘Doppelganger’. With his forthcoming, “When We Get There”, he is distilling more than a decade's worth of musical experience into his most intimate, vulnerable and authentic artistic expression yet.
Starting his journey from a bedroom studio in New Delhi in 2010, Dualist Inquiry has earned widespread critical acclaim while building a dedicated following. He has supported the likes of Bonobo, Fatboy Slim, Flying Lotus, DJ Shadow, Beardyman and more. He has represented India on stages such as The Great Escape Festival UK, Berlin Music Week, Ultra Music Festival Seoul, Malasimbo Philippines and Music Matters Singapore. He has also delivered landmark performances on the most prominent stages of India’s music festivals including Magnetic Fields Festival, NH7 Weekender, Electric Daisy Carnival and more. He is also a seasoned regular at India’s foremost underground venues and events.
With over a decade of remarkable development as an artist and performer – “a blur,” in Dualist Inquiry's own words – the left-of-centre music-maker has cultivated a reputation for his unique artistic voice, and the importance he places on holding firmly to his authenticity and personal sound even in the face of meteoric career growth. This journey as an artist has required Dualist Inquiry to unlearn and relearn his approach to making music so as to stay connected to his true sound. His upcoming 9-track album, “When We Get There”, thematically merges the past and present to offer a deeper and more nuanced chronicle of Sahej’s creative and personal growth.
Having started his career as a producer, Dualist Inquiry has also developed a passion for DJing over the years, bringing his own unique style with energetic, diverse and exciting sets that span electronica, house, electro, breaks, UKG and more. This new avatar of Dualist Inquiry has been rapidly gaining popularity amongst Indian audiences, having most recently played Boiler Room Chandigarh, Mixmag “The Lab”, and Road to Lollapalooza to name a few.
Alongside Dualist Inquiry’s growth as an artist, he has also embraced the role and responsibility of a mentor and entrepreneur to nurture the spaces he is the flagbearer of. Co-founder of India’s leading independent music community radio, boxout.fm, Sahej has also helped foster India’s next generation of artists through multiple programmes and collaborations, including the 2019 edition of Internshala’s ‘Intern with Icon’, where he was featured as a mentor alongside 2-time Oscar Winner A.R. Rahman and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
His illustrious journey to date has earned him accolades ranging from the being featured cover of Rolling Stone India, Forbes India’s 30 Under 30 and GQ India’s 50 Most Influential Young Indians, to winning Artist of the Year at VH1 Sound Nation Awards, getting his track ‘Divide’ catalogued by Apple (Global) for their iPhone memories library and having ‘Delta Wave’ be declared among “2019’s Best Tracks” by Resident Advisor.
With the upcoming February 2024 release of “When We Get There”, the coming year promises to be a special one. Dualist Inquiry will be debuting a brand new Live A/V show centered on the new album material at Magnetic Fields 2023 and has many other exciting plans to be announced soon.
