Established as a live, experimental producer and active voice in dance music and sustainability in today's society, drusnoise is an artist whose academic credentials seep into his sonic output in captivating and compelling ways. The man behind drusnoise is the Canadian-born, Berlin-based producer and scholar Dr. Stephen Williams. Under his drusnoise alias, Williams combines his creative and academic background through thought-provoking live sets that nod to his work beyond the technosphere. Williams is the Research Group Leader at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam, Germany, and part of the research team at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. His inquiry focuses on energy system transition in Canada, Sweden and Germany. Techno landed in Williams life in the mid-90s, when he was immersed in Canada's free-thinking rave scene and later discovered the underground circuits of London and Paris. The ethos of these scenes – freedom, love, and nurturing a creative community – intrigued Williams. A move to Berlin in 2018 allowed Williams to explore the German techno scene and construct a home setup including analog drum machines, samplers, modular synthesizers, FX pedals and outboard gear. Today, drusnoise's live sound palette spans improvised and programmed sequences, four-to-the-floor techno, noise and synthesized tones to create contrast and tension. Navigating a hardware-heavy setup with no computer, the more cables for drusnoise, the better. This method allows him to reinvent every set and allow free-flowing production that extends into recorded tracks. Drawing inspiration from hybrid artists like Lady Starlight, Rødhad, Ritchie Hawtin and Ellen Allien, drusnoise echoes their approach by manipulating the archetypal elements of techno while leaving his own stamp on the genre. Embedding field recordings that fuse nature and urban life, like rain on metal, to transporting climate data sourced from an astronomical observatory, drusnoise's ability to merge the theme of sustainability with propulsive techno is fast becoming his blueprint. A co-founder of Berlin Modular Society, Williams is a firm advocate of educating tech-curious individuals who want to learn about modular systems while supporting new talent – particularly female, non-binary and BIPOC artists – in the process. Working with society co-founders Simon Redfern (3rd Party Influence) and Josef Kunz (josefkunzmusik) the trio curates monthly live modular synth and hardware events in Berlin. Previous drusnoise releases include the self-released debut EP Invisible Wires and the standalone self-released track Angel Navigation. Up next, drusnoise will drop an EP and live project titled Techno for the Anthropocene. The release features mutated vocals from lecturers in the sustainability sector weaved into druisnoise's rich sound design and weighty textures. Having presented his “sustainable techno” work at the online International Transdisciplinary Conference in 2021, Williams is keen to foster discussions that merge sustainability and electronic music. Performing live, drusnoise has played throughout Berlin, from Loophole, Maze, and Riverside Studios to DIY open airs at Tempelhofer Field and a farm in Brandenburg. As nightlife reopens up in a near-post-pandemic era, drusnoise is proving a vital artist in today's electronic music scene.
