DJ RaQuel is the artist alias of NYC/LA based DJ and producer James Outlaw, a selector with over 25 years behind the decks who is renowned for meticulously programmed sets that weave unexpected tracks into cohesive late-night dance floor journeys. Originally emerging in the late 1990s LA club circuit under the name James Rockwell, RaQuel began as a hip-hop DJ before discovering the creative freedom of the LA underground warehouse scene. That shift shaped his sound: basement and warehouse music, informed by years spent collecting soul, disco, and dance-floor R&B. RaQuel is also one half of the production duo gem1n1seven, whose debut track Spaceflight was released on the influential New York label, Plant Music, founded by NY Legend Stretch Armstrong and Dominique Keegan of The Glass. The record received international support and was featured on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix in 2015.
