Biografía
Diskarte is a band formed locally by Jon Catanus to host the DIY event “Jazz Night @ 187” monthly from (2017-2019) at community art space 187 Augusta Avenue, Kensington Market. During this series, they functioned as a backing band featuring vocalists and horn players from all over the city. They also facilitated a jam session at the end of each show, bringing students from the different music programs of Toronto together under one roof. The current lineup of Diskarte is a mix of University of Toronto and York University alumni, Jon Catanus (drums), Caleb Klager (bass), Bjorn Kriel (vibraphone) and Victor Xu (piano). Diskarte is also known for facilitating the concert series “Nujabes Anthology Project,” (2017-present) where they pay musical tribute to the work of Japanese hip-hop legend, Seba Jun. These DIY-style concerts were first held at 187 Augusta and then held at the Drake Underground which sold out, with over three hundred people in attendance. Since then, they have partnered with Davie Studios to produce three more Nujabes tribute shows at Apartment 200. Their goal for the series is to harness the energy created on stage and by the audience, in order to shine a new light to Nujabes’ well-loved catalogue. Aside from the Nujabes Anthology Project, Diskarte plays all around Toronto, sharing bills with bands such as HARMOLODICS (Detroit), Mafuba (MTL), re.verse, Lavender Town, and Kubla at staple Toronto venues like The Great Hall, The Drake Lounge, The Monarch, Burdock and Tapestry. They have also played shows in Montreal with Lavender Town at Brasserie Beaubien, for a house concert series called “Humble Abode,” and at the most recent “Stompbox Festival” in London ON to a packed house. Following the release of their debut EP “Sinag” in May 2025, they played at the Toronto Jazz Festival in June, and are set to play at Kensington Market Jazz Festival in September.
