This is the mind behind DEPTH - founded by two creative individuals sharing a vision of electronic music. DEPTH is on the quest of sound experimentation through former and contemporary techniques for electronic composition. Serendipity united M.&J., as they were both working in the London nightlife scene when they formed a natural connection by sharing a common passion and taste for music. Although they had come from different backgrounds (M. from Finland and J. from France), they recognised how they could combine their skills and establish themselves as an interactive music artist duo. M. had been trained in classical piano, studied music theory from the age of five, and has been performing ever since then. M. also had brothers with a love of music, and who were also musicians ( one was a DJ who exposed her to the experience of mixing records). Even as a teenager, M. was writing songs and lyrics for her band, playing keyboard, and singing on stage. More importantly, M’s passion became her strength, as she had the natural ability to improvise with keys, melodies and more, in a way similar to the method of Jazz music. J. was raised in an artistic family, and music was the centerpiece of everyday life. Collecting records and recording tapes was a daily routine. Although J. studied piano at a younger age, he was more interested in devices and technology. Over the years J. mastered the art of mixing, and also attended specialised courses which led to him developing a reputation as a resident DJ in London nightclubs. J. has also immersed himself in music production courses at Point Blank in order to complete the missing links. In the beginning, M.&J. worked intensively together and produced their very first improvised live set, which they performed in between London DJ sets. That early collaboration involved a very basic setup: two laptops, a Novation keyboard, and drum controllers. Building from that positive experience, the duo understood that live performances would be a very important part of their repertoire in the future. For DEPTH, it is important that they discover and craft a unique sound, no matter how long it takes. The duo’s compositions focus on musicality, harmonies, and sound design. More importantly, improvisation is at the core of everything they create. DEPTH has been performing in London’s well-known venues such as Corsica Studio, and Oval Space. Internationally, their first live festival appearance was at Airfield Festival 2015 in Sibiu, Romania.
