DJ and writer Dave Haslam made his DJing debut at the Hacienda in 1986. Ian Brown, Tim Burgess, and the Chemical Brothers were regular visitors to Haslam’s ground-breaking DJing events at the Hacienda, and all have credited Haslam as an inspiration. He played over 450 times at the legendary club, including on the last night the Hacienda was open; June 28th 1997. He has since DJ'd worldwide, including Paris, Detroit, Berlin, Ibiza, New York, Hamburg, Lima, Geneva, Cleveland; at afterparties for New Order, Gorillaz, and Depeche Mode; and at the film premieres of both ’24 Hour Party People’ (in which he appears, playing himself) and the Ian Curtis bio-pic ‘Control’. He also appears in the Carol Morley film ‘The Alcohol Years’. His journalism has appeared in 'NME', 'Les Inrocks' (France), ‘The New Statesman’ and 'The Guardian'; he’s written four books on music and culture. His latest book, ‘Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs & Music Venues’ was published on August 13th 2015. ‘The Sunday Times’ declared the work a “must read” and described by the ‘Herald’ (Scotland) as “impressive...beautifully written, incredibly readable and fascinating”. He attended Joy Division's last ever show back in May 1980; since then, Sonic Youth have slept on his floor; Neil Tennant introduced him to Tracey Emin; Tony Wilson threatened to shoot him; he took John Peel to see Public Enemy; he's cooked cauliflower cheese for Morrissey; lectured on Joy Division at the Middle Tennessee State University; chaired a symposium on urban futures during the Manchester Architecture and Design Festival; and conducted live onstage interviews with guests including John Lydon, Jeremy Deller, Neneh Cherry, and David Byrne. He has appeared on radio and TV on dozens of occasions (on BBC, Canal Plus, VH1, Arte, etc) discussing a wide variety of subjects, from graphic design to ecstasy, urban regeneration to the Notting Hill riots, and from the Smiths to Daft Punk. Pitchfork recently premiered a short film about the disco pioneer Cerrone, in which Haslam features alongside Nile Rodgers.
