Biografía

Here's one version of a story about me and music. I'm from Wisconsin. I grew up in Iowa. As a kid and teenager, I played piano, clarinet and guitar, which I enjoyed, but didn’t love. In 2000, about five years after having fallen in love with electronic music, I began playing records. A few years later, I earned a residency with a weekly electronic music event called Lock, Stock & Three Smoking DJs. In 2003, that event morphed into a weekly event called Vinyl. From then until moving to Auckland, New Zealand in the beginning of 2006, I ran and was a resident for Vinyl, which in part involved booking DJs and producers from all around the Midwest, namely Chicago and Minneapolis. I also ran a weekly radio show on 88.5 KURE around this time, which featured exclusive and unreleased electronic music productions provided by a wide variety of labels. While in Auckland, I held a five-month residency at an underground venue on the upper end of Queen Street and played outside a few times in Piha, a small surfing village west of Auckland. It was a short stint, but extremely fun. At the end of 2006, I moved back to the U.S. and continued running Vinyl until moving to Washington D.C. in 2008 to pursue graduate studies. During graduate school, I played the occasional underground party, but for the most part took a hiatus from music. In 2010, I moved to Oakland and began working on music again and in 2012, driven by a desire to deepen my musical practice and a beautiful woman, I moved to San Francisco. In San Francisco, I quickly earned a residency with Qoöl, the longest running electronic music event in San Francisco, founded by the legendary Jondi and Spesh of Loöq Records. From there, I began producing a monthly mix series, learning how to produce my own music, pursuing gigs and exploring in earnest the lively electronic music community in San Francisco. In the course of this work, I became good friends with Will Spencer, Alex Blackstock, Petko Nikolov and Santiago Lopez, each a brilliant artist in their own right. Currently, Will, Alex and myself are co-founders of and residents for Concept, which we bill as an experiment in musical communication. Alex, Petko, Santiago and myself are co-founders of and residents for Sui Generis, a quarterly, intimate underground event series focused on bringing in live electronic music acts who have never been to or performed in San Francisco (our first show featured Lake People, our second featured Canson and our third, which is occurring on Halloween 2014, will feature DoubtingThomas). I’ve released a few remixes on Loöq Records and I’ll be releasing a five-track debut EP on the same label in early 2015. Memorable gigs include playing with Will Spencer for Listed Productions PLAY party, playing Atish’s Tutu Tuesday party and performing opening duties for Philipp Jung, Baikal and Nico Stojan. My two most memorable times playing music are on Tunita’s Beach for the Monks of Funk 2014 “Everyday I Dream of Dancing on the Beach” event and in the desert, with my musical partner-in-crime and best friend Alex Blackstock during Burning Man 2013, which is where Alex and I decided to pursue a musical collaboration we call Solomon & Sadao: @solomon-sadao.
